FALL FIREARMS DEER SEASONS MAKING A DIFFERENCE
The Commonwealth's October firearms antlerless deer seasons - early
muzzleloader season, Oct. 13-20, and special firearms for junior and senior
hunters, Oct. 18-20 - are just around the corner and many hunters are spending
more time afield to prepare for them, according to the Pennsylvania Game
Commission.

NEW DEER MANAGEMENT BROCHURES AVAILABLE ON THE WEB
The Game Commission has developed eight new brochures to help Pennsylvanians
learn more about why and how the agency manages deer, and the factors,
variables and intangibles that influence this evolving management process.

"These brochures provide another way for Pennsylvanians to increase their
knowledge of deer and why and how we manage them," explained Dr. Christopher
Rosenberry. "We're hopeful that people whose lives are influenced by deer will
take the time to read them and that it will help improve their understanding of
the whole process."

WARM-WEATHER VENISON CARE
Improperly field-dressing a deer carcass and warm weather can impact the
quality of venison quickly if a harvested deer isn't handled properly warns Dr.
Walter Cottrell, Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife veterinarian.

GAME COMMISSION ANNOUNCES EHD CONFIRMED IN CAMBRIA COUNTY
Dr. Walter Cottrell, Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife veterinarian, today
announced that test results of dead deer from the southwestern part of the
state have confirmed that epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) has been found in
Cambria County.

Results released today involved a juvenile male that was found dead in
Westmont, Cambria County. However, there have been no other reports of sick or
dead deer in Cambria County. Other counties in which EHD has been confirmed in
wild, free-ranging deer are Allegheny, Beaver, Greene, Washington and
Westmoreland counties. The Game Commission has received reports of EHD
affected deer in other counties as well, but still is awaiting laboratory
results.

On Oct. 11, the state Agriculture Department announced that it had confirmed
EHD in farmed deer in Franklin County. EHD has been confirmed in cattle in
Franklin, Somerset and Washington counties, but no mortalities were reported in
these cases. As of today, there have been no reports of EHD in wild, free-
roaming deer in Franklin or Somerset counties.

"Our Wildlife Conservation Officers, Land Managers and other field staff have
been on the look out for evidence of EHD in wild deer," said Rob Criswell, Game
Commission Southcentral Region director. "We urge anyone finding dead deer or
sick deer to contact our office with specific information.

"Fortunately, the weather has begun to cool, and we hopefully will soon have
our first good frost, which is expected to kill the insects that are spreading
the EHD virus. Also, as we have not found EHD in the wild, free-roaming deer
in Franklin County, we do not expect that hunters will notice any impact on
local deer densities."

The Southcentral Region Office phone number is 814-643-1831, and serves the
following counties: Adams, Bedford, Blair, Cumberland, Franklin, Fulton,
Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, Perry and Snyder.

GAME COMMISSION URGES HUNTERS TO CONSIDER SHARING VENISON
Hunters who are successful in the upcoming deer hunting seasons are encouraged
by the Pennsylvania Game Commission to consider participating in the state's
Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH) program, which channels donations of venison
to local food banks, soup kitchens and needy families. Pennsylvania's HSH
program is recognized as one of the most successful among similar programs in
about 40 states.

EXCITEMENT BUILDING FOR THE FALL TURKEY SEASON
The Pennsylvania Game Commission reports that sizeable wild turkey populations
await hunters across the Commonwealth, but finding them may be a challenge
because fall foods are in great supply in many areas.

LOCAL WILD TURKEY INFORMATION ALSO AVAILABLE ONLINE
Each year, Pennsylvania Game Commission field officers and foresters develop
game forecasts for the areas they work to share with interested hunters and
trappers. Observations on local wild turkey populations are always a part of
this annual offering. The Pennsylvania Game Commission's "Field Officer Game
and Furbearer Forecasts" can be found centered on the homepage of the agency's
website - www.pgc.state.pa.us. Developed to share field officer perspectives
and observations on game and furbearer trends in their respective districts and
to help hunters and trappers get closer to the action afield, this information
helped many sportsmen and sportswomen have more enjoyable days afield last
year.

DOGS ALLOWED IN FALL TURKEY SEASON
The Pennsylvania Game Commission reminds hunters that a new state law permits
wild turkey hunters to use dogs in the upcoming fall season, which begins Oct.
27.

TURKEY HUNTERS URGED TO BE ATTENTIVE, SAFE
Every fall, hunters head into Pennsylvania's forests and woodlots in pursuit of
wild turkeys. According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, it's one of
autumn's greatest competitions as hunters try to call in their quarries. It's
also a time when hunters really need to be in tune with their surroundings.
