How big?

Gentlemen,
Many years ago when we wanted to go ice fishing we just took a chain saw and cut a hole in the ice.  Then we sat on the block or used it to hold our rod.  When we were done we just pushed the block back in the hole and by the next day it was frozen up again.
Now I hear that there is a size limit on how big a hole can be?  How big?

10" is max in pa.  Some places allow larger holes, particularly where spearing is popular.w_w.

If it has fins and gills, I'm there.

C'mon slick imagine the picture that would be on the front of the Erie paper if I did.  I could use a nymph and some weight and just stand 9' back from the hole.  Or I could use a tall strike indicator and stand back about 25' and wait.  I've got it all planned out.  I just have to find somebody who wants to help drive up there.  Just too much for my back and neck anymore to do it alone.  LOL!

I think a 10" hole is WAY to big for safety reasons and total overkill! IMO

You could easily break an ankle on a fresh 10" hole covered in snow.

Agreed, not to mention if you happen to have children or dogs out with you, it could become disastrous.

    Man Mike,
Do you have any idea how hard it's gonna be trying to hit a 6" hole from 40' with a dry fly?  Especially in the wind conditions you have up in the bay.  I'll definately have to go with a bead head nymph,  or a wooly bugger.

You ever tried pulling a steel-turd or a northern through a 6" hole, darn near imposible.  Not to mention trying to get papermouth crappie through the ice are much easier through a bigger hole.  Myself, once I start hitting the crappie later in the winter I bust out the power auger, which has a 10" bite.  Other then that I only use my 7" hand auger.  I agree that there aren't many uses for a large auger, but there are situations that they are nice or necessary.

I fish a lot with trap and I can say I LOVE it when he busts out the power auger....It's soooo nice pulling those fish through the bigger holes. No more lost fish by bonking them on the ice. By the way I have had gills and crappie not to mention numerous slimy steel and a few salmon no fit through a 6" hole!!!
