BLACK SQUIRREL

Yesterday, afternoon(in a snow storm) I did some late season bow hunting in Ohio.I saw no deer but did enjoy the show, saw 4 huge fox squirrels and one (pure) black squirrel. The black ran off 3 foxes but got real cozy with one fox, they even went in the same nest at dark. Did I see a grey squirrel ,in the black faze or was it a black fox squirrel?

The black squirrel is typically a black phase grey.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

I Think someone gave you some bad information on that leadman. First, the black is nothing more than a color phase of the gray squirrel. They are typically more aggressive than the gray and tend to push the grey out of an area where they are numerous. There are pockets of large numbers in areas of the U.S. and a few most everywhere. The blacks around Ravanna and Kent Ohio came from 10 that were trapped in Canada about 1960-61 and released on the grounds of Kent State to build up a breeding population on the grounds. A fox would love to be attacked by one as it would be an easy meal. It's true they are not afraid of humans as much as the other squirrels and on a college campus probably have nothing to fear anyway.

they can also be found in newton falls and canfield ohio.  seems as though when we see one in canfield, there are at least six or seven more close by.

There used to be a mangy looking black at Niagra falls, right there at the viewing area, and he wasn't shy about taking handouts.

from what i heard is that a gray squirrel may pop out a black every once in awhile. these are usualy small. there is a breed of black squirrels, these grow bigger than gray squirrels when adults. (i'm not sure if they're on steroids as mr. slickfish's photo implies) i see them usually around pine/hemlock forested areas.

We get them once in a while. Down in the swamp there's lots of them. The greys are possessive over the feeders with them.  greys run them out. notice the gold fur in it.

About the same time the PA Game Commission released all the coyotes and mountain lions they released black squirrels too.  Problem was, nobody fed the felines before release so most of the squirrels were eaten soon after.  Those that did survive took a while to breed and repopulate.

I heard this from a friend of a friends brothers uncles neighbors best friend who works with a guy who heard it from his sister-in-laws third uncle.

    So it must be true.
