Ausable (late) Report 6/14>17

arrived to the awsome able thurs afternoon
after "throwing" camp together i headed down to the flume area with flyrod in hand
water was at low critical stage which had me worried for sure
fished my way down stream and picked up 1 small brown and 1 decent 12" bow
fished to the posted sign and the landowners were swimming in the nice pool there so hiked back to camp and beat feet to the pocket water upstream
manaded to pick a few up there befor i had a very nice brown break off my favorite fly (bobbin minnow)
the green drakes started to come down at around 8:30pm and really the fish were not all that intrested
back to camp around 9:30pm
Friday:
woke up abit late and hit the river around 6am only to find 2 cars in the spot i wanted to fish, well that was ok
walked down and picked up 2 small browns and 1 brookie on a rusty spinner
by now the sun was up and the fish were down
after getting a nice breakfest at Fran's shop i walked into a pond i used to fish when i was a kid(big cherrypatch)
the blowdown was rough and around the pond was pretty bogged out
no pond fishing for this trip
back to camp for some zzzzzzz
after lunch beat the water some more with the fish hovering the bottom and not intrested in feeding
draks again coming down in late eve but some reason the fish were not responding (they were taking caddis flies)
the gang arrived and we got the Conclave going&going&going until around 2am
the plan was to hit the water at 4:30am(yea right!)
Sat:
up at 5:30 and on the river(very Low)by 6am
fished the Quarry hole with a partner and he landed 3 nice browns, i was beat and took the time to nap while he fished
nothing was really going on so we moved to another spot by High Falls Gorge and flogged the water for an hour with nothing..
i knew ther was fish there but we could not get them to respond to anything we threw at them
i said enough of this and walked up to the truck and grabbed the spinning rod
3 casts with a #7 Rapala and it was fish on....
landed 5 fish out of the same spot and we called it quits until eve.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....
back to the water around 6pm and fished some flat water with dries
no luck until around 8:30 pm
a sparce drake fall was starting but a huge caddis swarm started coming out of the brush and the water came alive
it became apparent to pick ot the large fish rising over the small ones
we landed about 8 fish in a 1/2 hr period then it was over, they were nowhere to be found
Sun.
up early>left town early
a great time was had meeting new folks and new found friends

now here is the skinny on the Ausable:
the river is Super Low and all reasonable fishing is between 4:30am>8:00am then 8pm till after dark
fish the pocket water and subject the fish to as little handling as possible, they are stressed big time

Monday i'll be heading to the St.Regis area and try pond fishing for the entire week
i'm pretty sure the ponds are going to be quite tough
with the warm weather and lack of rain it may be time to swith to a warm water fishery until the fall
which by then all heck breaks loose and my head spins in so many directions>trout, salmon, turkeys & deer
New York has so many options to offer and i have so little time
24hr days are just not long enough
                                                  Good Luck Out There
                                                        Peace & Tuna

Nice report Tuna...  gotta love the Ausable...was Fran still sitting behind the door tying flies?  Seems like he's been perpetually in that spot.
I similarly was having a slow day up there til I put on a F-11 Gold Rapala and ripped it across the current, and once again that lure proved irresistible. They wouldnt touch any spinners or phoebes, but they attack that Rapala like Pac Man Jones on a stripper.

Fran is a staple of the area
as you know the shop has moved(last year) and his business is doing well
the food there is great home cooking with very friendly price

your much right about the Rapala
    while i love fly-fishing w/dries i also catch fish
so when situation dictates i use fish catching methods

now on the ponds it will be meat & potatoes except for one i plan fishing it's artificial only

BTW: no pic's from the last trip, maybe next week........
