pin in water

First day pinning on the 29th... worked through the kinks of casting by around three lol. Fished with a longtime friend and fellow pinner and was told it doesn't hurt to get the reel wet. Is this true? Was also curious on cleaning methods and how often this should be done.

It probably doesn't hurt to get the reel wet, but if its below freezing the reel will probably freeze up quick.  I know pins tend to freeze a little quicker with them being all aluminum frames and spools.  As far as cleaning,  depends what reel you have and how hard you fish it.  If while fishing you set it down and theres anyway dirt can get in it you should clean it everytrip,  if not every few trips should be fine.  Most of the reels now the spools come off easy enough and cleaning them is less than a few minute ordeal.

By past experience of dropping rod & reel in the water at 17deg., it takes about 30sec. to lock up solid. i clean mine after every time out,too much money wrapped up in it not to take care of it.

How do you clean your pin do you use a product on it or do you just take it apart and clean the dirt and dust out?

Just take the spool off, wipe off any obvious dirt, spray it with the air compressor and put it back togethor.wipe it down with WD-40 to help repel some of the water droplets that turn to ice, give the spool a shot of reel magic and ready to go.

Tolerences are so tight on quality pins that even the smallest of debris can hinder the take off and spin of the reel.  Yes, getting it wet won't really hurt the reel as long as you take it apart and clean it, but its not recommended.  Most maintenece manuals will tell you the same....Good Luck with the new pin....what kind is it anyway?

This is true, tolerances are very tight on these reels and spindles.  I got a new Ross Flow when they come last spring, if the temperature drops below 30 deg.  the water and expansion of the alum.  hinders the spin big time, i have to fish my other pin when conditions are like this.

okuma sheffield... landed 4 and prob. had upwards of 20 hookups.. really helped having an experienced someone there to guide me through the inevitable frustration first day on the water with the pin.  Found a nice diagram of cleaning instructions for an islander on another forumn even though I know there are some mundane differences between the two... here it is if anyone is interested    http://www.salmoncrazy.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=2500
