Late season archery

Who's going?  Who still has a tag?  Anybody have any good tactics that work this time of year?

I will be pursuing a buck.  Filled two doe tags, one with bow and one with rifle.  Hunt between beddings and food sources.  I like the afternoons and I like hunting around producing apple trees. Good Luck

The Lord has blessed us all today... It's just that he has been particularly good to me.

I will still be out from time to time. Got busted today at 10 yards behind my tree, have no idea what it was but could have been a legal buck. Too much snow hanging on the underbrush to tell though.

Get out tomorrow morning(12/14) and walk your area you hunt. This will indicate the travel areas in the snow where the deer(which are spooked) are running. I did it today midday in the snow and I gained a lot of info for which trees I need to climb in the late season. I found a heavily traveled overgrown logging road that is almost impassable even now by foot. Tons of tracks and bedding spots. Also not far from where I was busted this evening.

Get out in the snow and look for the tracks that are bigger and splayed. I was told that bucks carry their headgear and thick neck much heavier in the front, thus splaying the track open instead of a tight track.

Might not be true but I have seen enough to believe in it.

I agree with goby. Look for the fead and the deer will be close.
I,ll be back at it to fill my buck tag. The horns will be dropping soon so hopefully he shows up before that happens.
I set my stand beside the bedding area. Good luck, we,ll need it.

I know where they feed this time of year...Outta my birdfeeder!  I wont shoot one off the porch, tho.  Seems a bit unethical.

Hunt around feed.... Deer get hungry this time of year...( Due to rifle season and it being winter...) And with Does come Bucks. I will be out there and I will be hunting over a food plot wearing my bleat can out, it is most effective in the post rut....

I have a treasure lake tag I'd like to fill.  We give our deer to the hunters sharing harvest in Dubois.  Other than that, time to get the smokepole out for 4A!

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

Get out there man, get a picture up of a buck!

Hows everyone else doing, I've seen 3 doe, still looking for a shooter.

Here's a question, is there really a difference in an old doe, and a young doe? Which would be better eating?

rule number one for late season, deer are slaves to their stomachs...rule number two.....refer to rule number one haha...get around some sort of food source and alot of times you can follow the same feeding patterns from early archery season...however this isnt always true it all depends on pressure from rifle season....good luck to all

Got a few pictures of a nice 8 that I was after all of early archery on my trail cam last week.  Good to know that he survived the gong show of shotgun hunters in 2B gun season.  Hopefully i'll be able to catch him heading to the feeding area friday or saturday, as I have found the main trails heading to and from in the snow.

I bagged the 8 point that I referred to earlier in this thread on Friday at last light.  I thought the shot was a little far back so I went home, changed, and ate dinner before coming back to the spot that I first stuck  him.  I found good blood immediately which led me to him about 70 yards away.  My shot was further back then I would like, but it still clipped the lungs.  My best buck so far.  I dont know how to post pics on here so if someone wants to give me their email either on this post or via pm I can send it to them to put on here.

Thanks!  I had a very frustrating early archery that involved numerous experiences with the property owner's neighbor trying to boot me and claiming to be "the only one who is allowed to hunt back here".  Granted he has hunted the land longer than me, but I have permission none the less!  It is about a 5 acre overgrown field (prime bedding area)along with the surrounding woods, probably 10 acres all together in northern 2B.  I had this buck patterned before the season, and thought it was strange he quit showing up as soon as archery started.  I come to realize the neighbor liked to still hunt by walking through the middle of the bedding area throughout the day, as I saw it happen more than once.  No wonder this buck went completely nocturnal until no more hunters were in the woods, and even on Friday he only moved during the last possible shooting light.
