I have the Orvis Battenkill Big Game V,  used mailnly for Salmon.  Its a great reel with a nice drag and very light.  I picked up an extra spool and was gonna use it for steelies but I just hate to give up my J Ryall the drag system is awesome just a little heavier.   for the price you can't beat the Orvis.   just my thoughts

The BK LA's pick on a ton of line per turn.  I've never had any issues of them freezing either.   Good reel for the money.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

you can also find a reel from china (same as the BK) that is just as good (probably better) that doesn't come with the 50%-80% markup that comes with the whorvis name stamp

In this size/price range you could also consider a Bauer Mackenzie, Danielsson 6-11, Nautilus, or even a TFO Terry Hayden.  The Danielsson and Nautilus are sealed composite drags, the Bauer and the TFO are draw-bar cork drags.

Do you have a QUICK series Ryall??? I am having an 8wt Dan Kraft rod being built and would like to put an american made  reel on it...the Ryall came to mind. What are your favorite features? Drawbacks?
    ORIGINAL: jrb32

I'm currently using the Q series 8     and I love that reel, the drag system is awesom, never had any problems even in 18 degree weather.  The only draw back is the weight, but its hardly a factor, this is used for steelies only and matched to a Loomis 7wt GLX.  In my opinion the biggest selling feature for me was the drag system and the fact I can send it back for repair or overhaul and all I pay is the shipping.  I sent it back two years ago for just that and they replaced the brake shoes and cleaned it up 12.00 shipping cost.  hope this helps?  Good luck
