How's the ice?

Anybody out checking ice or fishing yet?  Got a couple oldtimers, like myself, asking how the erie bays are. Young guy said shenango should be ready by next weekend.

Hey Chauncy I live 10 minutes from Lake Arthur and have been checking it daily.  On Sunday I saw 2 guys tip-up fishing in the muddy creek finger.  I drilled 2 holes and found 4 inches of ice.  The lake has been freezing and thawing constantly for the past 3 weeks causing a lot of variations in the thickness.  I personaly do not trust the ice at Arthur yet, nor would suggest anyone going out, but I would suggest getting your gear ready.

I also drove up to Erie on Sunday and found similar conditions with patchy ice.  about 30% of the main bay was frozen.  Marina, Misory, and Horseshoe bay were completly frozen.  I didnt see anyone out fishing nor did i see anyone testing the ice.

It's hard to say what the rain yesterday did to the ice.

Here is a link to the EYC web cam.  Currently they have the cam pointing twords shore, but often it is pointing over twords the park. I use this link to get a bit of an idea of ice conditions for the main part of the bay.

Nice report Gus....I don't particularly trust the ice at moraine ever.  Always a lot of soft spots.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

Thanks Musky.  I agree there are are a lot of soft spots.  I usualy drill a hole every 10-20ft and check the thickness if I am the first person out in an area.
