Crossing water

How many of you have crossed water to hunt on foot. Not using a boat but crossing a rather large stream. How did you go about it. Did you wear knee high boots, waders and switch them out. Interested in thoughts.

We cross the Susquehanna river every duck season, sometimes with waders, most time with hip boots. This year we could have done it in sneakers !  Gets real interesting when crossing before dawn and in a dense fog when the river is up.......jim

we've done it in deer season a few times.  Not big streams, but big enough to get you uncomfortably wet.  Normally that time of year there is low water and you can find a shallow riffle to get through.  Otherwise find a wide spot.

We did consider trash bags once.  We already wore 12" boots and considered duct taping trash bags up to knee height just to get across.  Didn't go that route.

    Thanks

    J,
I have a chunk of open water i need to cross to get to one of my favorite small game spots. I leave an old pair of hip boots tied tightly in a bag that I leave in a hollow tree. Depending on where your hunting, and how many guys are in the woods, this may work for you.

I don't always snag fish, but when I do...
    I choose Little Cleos

I'm the best looking smartest snagging poacher alive...

I was thinking the rubber hip boot route. Im sure my boots can take it but its depth i worry about. Good idea with letting a pair, although this water has lots of traffic.

I do it all the time...

give it a shot in chest waders first...cross back & forth to be sure there are no holes/drop offs/rocks/stumps ect.  dont take "steps"...shuffle your feet slowly across the bottom...fell your way along....Once you get comfortable and you know the bottom switch over to your hip boots which will be alot lighter esp. early in the archery season when you can get over heated easily.

    most importantly...TAKE YOUR TIME....

Have done it often in spring gobbler and small game.  Have a few good spots with alot less pressure because of the stream crossing.  You can get there from the other side but it is a long walk which few are willing to make.

I use hip boots then stash them and put on my hunting boots.

For deer, the stream or river acts as a natural funnel, can be a great archery spot.

    Dude, jump you pansy!

Chest waders seem to be the difference maker here. Just be careful!
