Shot a doe, called in a ton of young bucks.  Passed on an 8 the second to last day.  Buddy shot a 10 with 7 inch browse tines out of a favorite tree of mine the last Tuesday.  I was there Monday.  Son of a gun..

Not really.  We ended up becoming friends because of the spot.  Can't say it's "my" tree.  Public property.   I wish it was MY ridge.

Hunted morning and night out of 9 different stands on open land in 1B and 2F for 5-1/2 weeks including a few all dayers during the rut. Saw 24 different bucks of which 21 were in easy bow range. None of the 21 were legal and only one of the 24 which was nothing to brag about. Got ****ed and left 2 days early for Ohio. Saw 11 bucks in 6 days, passed on 2 bigger than any I saw in Pa. and shot a 4-1/2 year old  8 point 19" inside. On a side note I had a shooter here that went nocturnal the first week from hunter pressure that I saw again last night so there is still hope for gun season.

Wow, big mature animal.  great kill.

Let me ask you, the 24 bucks you saw in Pa, how does that stack up to other years and why the apparent abscence of legal animals in your area?

Also, in Ohio, what is your opinion on why the numbers of older mature bucks are there.  Short gun season, genetics, hunter retraint etc....

Thanks guys, it was perhaps my heaviest whitetail buck to date. DPMS--Over the last 30 or so years I have averaged shooting opportunities on approx 12-18 bucks during archery season each season so this year is a bit above normal although I probably put in more hours at it. Before AR/HR I averaged chances on 2-3 good bucks each year. The first 4 years of AR/hR I had opportunities on 3-4 good bucks each year. Last year I had one and this year for the first time I can remember, none. Some of these over the years came after I had taken a buck and was looking for a barren doe. I really think that in the areas I hunt(all open to the public) the AR has reduced the antler size. Several deer I saw were at least 2-1/2 years old but not 4 on a side. I can understand why the guys who have private land to hunt like AR but really think it sucks for the rest of us.

As for Ohio--All the places I have ever hunted have either been swamps or reclaimed strip mines and are thick with briars, multiflora rose and other nasty stuff. Add a one week shotgun season as compared to our two week rifle and I think you have it. I don't know about genetics as my buck with good genetics should have been much better at his age but was just a real heavy horned 8. I do know that right now the chances of killing any buck on public land are  better in Ohio and the chances of getting a great buck have always been much better. The guys I hunt with down there have killed 3 that are much better than anything I have even seen in N.W. Pennsy. I do know that around the Pitts area there are some giants that compare with Ohio but not many up this way.

Thanks,

Is it fair for me to say that your experience shows that our antlered numbers are still good but the quality of the bucks your are seeing is decreasing with time?  Also, I am right to assume that you attribute it to high grading on heavily hunted public lands?

I would love to give Ohio a try during their lengthy bow season.  Some day.

I was out on some strip mine property last March and found a few nice rubs.  They were on telephone pools.

dpms--That's my take on the reason for so few legal bucks, at least on open ground in my area. There is some leased property and private ground around that still has some good ones but they are managing it the way they want. I hunt the edges when I can during the rut hoping to catch one coming of

jeremy-- That was a computer camera photo of a throwaway camera photo. My buddy  got some good pics but he hasn't sent them to me yet. I envy you guys who took the time to learn how to run the good cameras.

tip--I did't weigh him (should have) he was a real hog and I shot him in a thick bottom a half mile from the car all uphill. My partner was impressed with the deer but not where I shot him. We had a cart which helped when we could use it.

I shot a doe in the early doe season in 2b and a nice 8 on the 14th.  I saw 4 different bucks the morning of the 14th.  one was a 4, a 6, a small 7, and my eight all by 9am.  I did see a real big 10 and 5 other small er bucks on another property throughout the year.  one of the smaller oners was a small 8, and many, many does in 2b.  my wife, dad and i will be out to our spot on 1a both of them can still shoot bucks and i have a doe tag still.  my dad hunts 1a all year and he saw a real nice 8 and a huge buck going through a corn field.  he also saw a bunch of small bucks one of which he said was a very large bodied 4 point.  go figure.

Doe on video with the bow.

Buck will hopefully die in the next 2 weeks.

The Lord has blessed us all today... It's just that he has been particularly good to me.
