Sucker Spawn Tutorial (Tucan Sam)

Material and Tool List......

Hook: Tyers Preference
Tread: Red 6/0
Yarn: 4 contrasting colors (Glo Bug Micro Bling was used here)
Tail: Krystal Flash

Step #1

Tie on tread and cover the shank of the hook.

Step #2

Tie in Krystal Flash and secure. Trim tail to preferred length.

Step #3

Cut and Tie in the 4 different colors of yarn and secure.

Step #4

Loops...Start looping all four pieces of yarn, I like to get 5 loops, starting with the first loop being the smallest, the second a little bigger, the third a little bigger, the forth the biggest and the last on a little smaller (about the size of the third loop) After the final loop fasten the yarn securely and trim off extra.( I like to keep the extra small pieces for the dot strands for my blood dot patterns.) Whip Finish and apply head cement.

Finished Fly and Brothers and Sisters......

May the holes in your net be no larger than the fish in it.

Hey, nice job on the tutorial.  How'd you post more than one pic?  I try to post multiples and it tells me only 1 pic per message.   Great work though, I like the spawn when it's dense like that, the loopy stuff just doesn't cut it.   -O.C.T.

Haven't had a problem, if a proplem would arise, weight the shank, or add a bead....and there is always shot....

Beads work well for weight.  You can even get the colored tungsten to keep the scheme the same.  Great tutorial.  I just got S.S. down pat this year after 2-3 years of thinking they were a pia.

Thanks Sculpin, I tie my sucker spawn in a slightly different way, but its nice to know another method.

Confusion will be my epitaph, as I walk a cracked and broken path.

What a clear concise demo of how to tie this pattern. I have referred several new tiers to this and they all turned out a very fish-able fly on their 1st try. We need more folks like you who offer useful info and not silly barbs at each other.

Blue has been surprising at times for me. Once at manchester it caught fish for me and a buddy almost cast after cast but all the fish were jacks. Another time I was at 20 mile, tried blue with an orange dot one afternoon - caught several coho - odd thing being I could see them come across the pool about 8 feet to hit it yet the steelhead would not touch it.
