I have no idea why you posted this in the fly tying forum, but here it goes. it's personal preference. When I use skein, I always left the membrane on and ran the hook through it. Skein is a very durable bait and can get you a lot of bigger steel. Just take a knife or pair of safety scissors, cut a piece off the size you're looking for, and put it on your hook. To make sacs, I just used single eggs, or left the membrane on and wrapped it.
