if you're not setting the hook on leaves...

if you're not setting the hook on suspended  leaves, you're missing a TON of bites through out the season.

if you can't tell when a suspended leaf bumps your line/tippet , fly or bait, you either need to concentrate better or need a new set up that's more sensitive.

Steelies can be light biters.
They don't always dunk a float or aggressively attack your offering.

if you're reeling in leaves and didn't know the exact time they bumped your hook, you're missing lots of bites on those light bite days

LOL No kidding. I gave the herky- jerky to a bunch of leaves last weekend. A couple of them were keepers but I released them to fight another day anyway.

I don't give a crap if anybody listens to me or not.

not to sound rediculous but double tape is onto something.  ive often used natures boobers(bent green sticks) when night carp fishing. id say it would be less spooky.

I've used the milkweed balls as floats. usually only good for one fish until they fall off the line, but they deffinately look natural.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

Ive drifted wax worms under cuts and branches, on a native stream, on top of a maple leaf and gently tugged it off once it got to where I wanted it.

The leaves were on the move today.  Good thing the I was able to see the strikes rather than feel them.

Mike,  I wasn't there on Sunday.  I was actually about a mile below that area.

Here is my suggestion, get some thin craft foam in tan or brown,My kids have a ton of it. Cut it to the shape of the leaf below.Poke a small hole in the pointed end and insert your line. Use a bobber stop and see if it works. I am going to cut one out and see how it does. I'll try to post a pic of it on here this week.

Didn't I just say that leaf thing on this thread?

Well if two of us are thinking about that it just has to be a good idea?  The problem is how do you attach the leaf-indicator?  Using a needle to thread the line makes it un-easy to do on the stream.  How about getting one of those plastic q-tips, cut a one inch piece off, glue it to the leaf-indicator, slit the skinny tube and slide line in and pin with a toothpick?

That sounds like it might work, the problem might be with casting, resistance wise.If you are just roll casting than it shouldn't be an issue. maybe we should team up and start producing them (LOL). who knows there might be niche in the market. I haven't been lucky enough to make it up this year yet, I coach high school soccer,U6 soccer, work full time and am going back to college full time, plus I have two kids under 4 years old, so I'm kinda busy like all of the time. but I am comming up in November sometime, so I hope to get into a few fish. can't wait until my oldest is ready for the tribs, another couple of years. she does an awesome job on the bluegills and bullheads in the summer, but I don't think Momma wants her on the stream just yet.

I have used pieces of foam on my hooks.  It does work, but not entirely effective.

Best thing to do is fish one fly.. something I never do in Erie.

When the leaves are bad, real bad, nothing matters.  It can be impossible trying to fish runs and seams.  You can get away with tailouts at times.

If the majority of the leaves haven't come down yet, I'd suspect this rain (especially with a good wind), will fill the streams.  yikes.  I was thinking about muphering my way up there.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

I buy sheets of green foam from WallyWorld and cut leaf shapes out of them to make indicators from or just make the yarn style indicators with strips of foam instead of yarn, way better than the yarn. The subdued colors seem to spook steel less under low flows but when they're running from their own shadows that doesn't even work.
