I may be wrong, but I think Walnut IS closed after 10pm not far upstream of the Manchester Bridge.

From the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat site:
  • From September 2 until the opening day of trout season in April, all Lake Erie tributary streams are closed to fishing from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. on the following day except for Walnut Creek* and Elk Creek north of Route 5.
  • It is unlawful to fish from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. on the following day within 50 yards of the mouth of both Trout Run and Godfrey Run while fishing the Lake Erie shoreline.

I think last year the Walnut limit was modified to be north of Manchester Rd. (Ah, yes, see link below.)

As for the reason, I think private landowners wanted a few hours of privacy.

Because the west side creeks that are open at night, are located on public property.

Who to contact?  Ask the private landowners on all those east side creeks if they'd be interested in having people night fish on their properties.

So now that 12 mile from rt 5 down is township property, then it should be open all night to fishing?

If the PFBC decides to permit it.

I think that there are too many homes nearby all the east side streams. Headlights, Noise and lanterns would all be reasons.

Harborcreek twp recently purchased the land on both sides of the creek from rt 5 to the lake on 12 mile creek. The homes are back off the road way and there are no parking signs on the creek side and anyone parking there might go over a steep drop off. I do believe that there are only 3 permenant residents along the 2 block section of road. The rest are seasonal.

I do see your point about the other creeks having homes there and the problems that could arise.

There are no homes from rt 5 to lake on 20 mile creek also.

I think it is a good thing to keep people off the streams after 10 at night.  It will help keep many of the private properties open to fishing.  I sure wouldn't want any yahoo's fishing in my backyard at night.

Well why not fish close to home and when you work every day 7 days a week till 7pm & can only fish at night then you can walk in my shoes. Take a lantern and a buddy along and you don't have to worry about anyone else stomping in your hole. You & your bud are the only ones there. Fish are relaxed and not spooked, lines are tight and the fishing is great. NOT SNAGGIN! Last year in 2 hours we had over 30 hook ups from 8-10pm. We don't keep a single fish. So if you don't like big crouds, or driving a long way, then you ought to give it try. I wonder if all those folks fishing the wall at Walnut after 10 are snagging or just out having a good time fishing?

If I'm not mistaken, the rules on Walnut have changed this year.  You are now restricted to the section north of Manchester road during the night time.  That for the most part is public property, but a great percentage from Manchester road upstream is private.

Out west most streams are or were closed to any night fishing to give the fish a chance.... but since people say little or no natural reproduction happends on these streams i can only think the fishing is suspended to keep people off of peoples land at night from being woke up by noise or barking dogs.

What does it hurt closing the tribs down for 7 hole whopping hours. I know if i was a fish getting hooked 10 times a day and getting bombarded with things i would like a break. I think it's a great idea i wish they would close all the tribs down from 9 pm till 6 am give the fish a break. They aren't going anywhere and besides i think  honestly that the snaggers come out at night not all saying all people snag but their are alot that do. Hell was at the nut yesterday and seen so called fisherman snagging on purpose. Well i called the wco they got a surprize.....if you have to snag stay the F at home. And you people know who you are.

Quit ****ing and take a kid fishing !!

I think on Saturdays and Sundays the tribs should be closed to fishing until 10:00 AM so that I don't have to get up at 4:00 in the morning to find a decent run to fish.

they might be closed at the time bc if you fell hit your head or something there is a good possibility no one will notice till morning.

Not busting your b@lls, well maybe a little, but everytime I've fished pre-dawn it was more trouble then it was worth. You get tangled and then spen all the time til it gets light fixing your rig....to each his own.

BTW take a day off and go fishing or you'll be in a hospital bed...

There are houses on 20 mile, and houses close enough to 16 mile to be awaken by the lights and dogs barking.  How would you like it if I showed up within distance of your house in the middle of the night?  You don't know who I am, and are praying that I'm just fishing.  People have different schedules and need their peace and quiet and sleep.  Perhaps if everyone was curtious it'd be a different story.  Unfortantely we all know that isn't true.

i am curious about the way you fish, do you move around with the lantern, or just set up in one hole? do you drift like you would in the daytime, or just throw out a chunk of skein with a big sinker  and put your rod on a forked stick?

    Glen,
I have done my fair share of night fishing on the creeks.(Within the legal times). Yes, i typically set up in one hole, with a headlamp..not a lantern. I float sacs or skein, with a mini glow stick on my bobber........ehem...i mean my indicator. I have not found it to be fast action, but we manage to get a few.

Maybe this rule should be throughout the State! Then the PFBC would get enough attention to change the law to the way it should be! I personally think night fishing is very relaxing and enjoyable and I HAVE NEVER SNAGGED A FISH nor have I bothered any private residents while I was fishing. I fish the small streams in Pittsburgh at night all spring for trout and have never had a problem with anyone! Seems some people work for a living and have to raise children I can't think of a better time to fish than when people are asleep!

It really makes me laugh when the mention of lanterns may be a bother. I live where we have street lights and everyone seems to be doing just fine. I would imagine a handful of people caused this ridiculous law to be put into effect. 1 guy screws it up for everyone!

I guess your probably for no sunday hunting also!

I guess this is why people say PA stinks with there stupid rules and regulations!

I forgot to mention I bet it really benefits the fish! I don't think Sunday fishing should be allowed it's a day of rest and I don'tthink people should have to deal with fishermen on Sundays. All the officers should be of on Sunday also.

When I fish at night, mostly 12 mile at the bridge. I like to use 6lb seguar line with a P-line barrel swivel about 3' up from a #12 hook and use a single egg with strike indacator and a micro shot about 4" above the hook, on my 10' noodle rod with a spinning reel. It is a great way to unwind from working 14 hours a day 7 days a week for the last year.

The number for the WCO is the first one in my cell and would not hesitate to call if I saw someone snagging. It is a shame that a few can ruin it for the majority. MAybe we should stick a trouble hook in their back and hook it up to a trailer hitch and drag them around for a few minutes.
