Help from experts needed

Hi, my name is Wanda and I cannot tell a sardine from a salmon. BUT a very dear friend of mine is an avid fisher and knows a lot about it. He likes to fish salmon in wild rivers. I owe this friend big and want to buy him the BEST fishing rod. Like, the absolute BEST.
What is the best?
Thanks for your help.

Is he a fly fisherman? And also, how much are you willing to spend?

Hi, and thanks for your replies...
What on earth is a fly thing? Sorry, I am very ignorant.
He uses worms and also lure...and catches lotsa salmon, but he said his rod is too heavy.
I can spend about 200 dollars.

    Wanda,

I have an uncle who lives in Alaska and he uses a Shakespeare Ugly Stik Lite Salmon/Steelhead Spinning Rod. Looking at reviews it seems that this is a great overall salmon rod.. It's 60 dollars. If you've interested please PM me, I'll sent you the retailer address.

Also there are many rods available Salmon & Steelhead rods available at FishUSA.

For salmon - Ugly-stix hard to beat - resonably priced and good guarantee. since you have $200.00 you could buy him both a spinning and fly rods, and have enough left over to buy him a good book on fishing with your own personal message. He'll probably enjoy all 3 for many years and think of you fondly!

Oh my God such great replies. I am going to get him some of the accessories mentioned.
I found out he uses a spinning rod, where the reel is bought separately.
Any new input? I could try to spend up to $300 if that would get him a better spinning rod and reel.
Hey, I am learning fast here.
You guys are awesome. I feel like going fishin´ now!!!

Found out something else: He has a DAIWA he likes, another one (from Corea) that broke recently, and he wants a "medium" one. Cannot ask him directly because he will see the gift coming.
Also, this guy lives now in Russia and fishes over there, in Karelia, so it's cold, but he does no ice fishing, or ocean fishing.
Man, this is a science by itself...

wanda, click on the picture on the top of this page.  it will take you to the tackle store.  you will find daiwa reels here as well as many others.  same goes for rods.  this site is maintained by fish usa and is indeed worthy of our support.  i will tell you that having ordered from bass pro and cabelas and some others over they years, fish usa prices are evenly matched.  you won't find it cheaper, for the most part.  plus you will find a whole lot of guys and gals who fish alot who can help you for free.

I will buy from this website. That's why I came here.
I am paying attention and researching all your advice. I will buy him  abook, and the flies and stuf recommended.
For rods, how about this one?

    SASR1002CGLX (loomis)
What else would I need to buy to go with this rod?
Would this be suitable for shallow river waters or deeper?

that Loomis is a very nice. He may like a longer rod, and when you order pay attention to whether it is a spinning or casting rod..

I would personally stay away from ugly sticks.  Yes, they are cheap and I guess they have a good warranty but, they are NOT a sensitive rod.  I just got back from the lower niagara river king salmon fishing and the guide had ugly sticks and Gander mountain guide series rods WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE!  The guide series rods were FAR superior to the ugly stick.  The ugly stick was VERY hard to sense bottom and detect strikes where the guides series made it very easy.  I would highly recommend something in the 8' range Gander mountain guide series medium heavy fast action.  I have a couple guide series rods of my own along with a st croix and I'll take my guide series over the more expensive st. croix everyday.  I did break my GM rod a couple years ago on a very cold day when I ran it into a tree walking to the creek.  They replaced it no questions asked, no receipt, no nothing.  The guy walked over handed me a brand new rod off the rack and said "anything else I can help you with"?   This would be a nice rod too.  https://www.fish307.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=12687.  I also have a medium heavy fast action 9'6" Rapala rod that I really like for big river, big fish fishing but, you can't find that rod anymore.

That is a bass rod $210. Probably not what you want for a Salmon. If he wants that, someone else may have reel advice(I have the same rod with a Quantum Energy 20PTi reel).

Excellent rod combo for bass in general.
