Personally, I like fishing for fresh run steelhead in water temperatures that optimize their ability to fight. Pound for pound, under those conditions using appropriate tackle, I think a steelhead's fight compares favorably to just about any fish that swims.
And though you have to work for it, I think those conditions can still be found without another angler in sight.

I'm loving all the winter pics...and finally some ice fishing pics....was hoping to get on the ice for them last year but the ice wasn't good enough till 3 days after I left after spending a week there...oh well...maybe this winter I'll get the UL jigging rod out and some 4# and see just how much fun they are through a hole in the ice

In Feb. I was catching(caught 2 lost 4) Steelys IN BETWEEN ice bergs in the bay (I was standing on a pier). Tough as h... to get them( was using 6lb test) in but I was smart enough to bring a long handled net along. Catching Steelhead through the ice, if that's not extreme fishing then I don't know what is!!! I look forward to that type of fishing all year long. Shame I can't find anybody else crazier than I am!!!!! I am an ice fishing junkie.

That's Walnutz marina. Coldest I think I've ever been in my life. Wind was awful that day.
If you look close, you can see the snow blowing in front of me (white blur)
Look at hood blowing up on my back.
I didn't even want to take a picture, but that was the biggest fresh female we ever caught at that time of year.
The fish was in the 9lb range.

Thats why I,m putting a wood burner in my living room. When you can,t fill your toes and hands,snot running down your lip and freezing there,
