I don't see the necessity for a guide on the PA tribs, just my personal opinion.  The streams are just too small and not enough area to fish not to know them all.  If one really wants to, they can truly hit every inch of fishable water in Erie in a meager amount of time.  I'm going to have to say keep your money, take the kids somewhere on Elk or the Nut and walk till you find fish.  If you don't feel like looking for them they are always in the manchester hole.

for the tribs that is.

I probably could Google it, but I want to know whose good at getting you to some chrome. Originally, I would never use a guide.. But one late conservation in a fly shop kind of got my attention about catching 50-100 some steelies in an outting, needless to say I was interested! No price range, though I don't have much money to spend, lol. Thanks!

fly,
No good guide, worth their weight in gold, would guarantee numbers.
Book a day or two with Jim J.. You will learn a great deal regardless of your skill level. I would guarantee that!
Best of luck.

Guys,
Thanks for all the info! I've always visited Jim's site because the info about the creeks is 100% reliable. Like I said I don't have that much money and when early December rolls around I'll have to look into my finances seeing how many trips I can make it up there. Gas's on the decline so it's looking good.. for now.

Thanks!

While I agree with others recommendations, is it just me surprised nobody mentioned Eggy ? Fished w/Tom many times and one thing for sure, he can fish and does love the game.   Dave

Loomis, i don't want to speak for the duuds considering a guide on Pa tribs, but it may not be about "finding" fish.
it may be about "catching" fish.

look at the reports page and see how many folks come home skunked or near skunked.
For every duud that reports he got skunked, there's a hundred   more that didn't report it.
In these low and gin clear conditions, it's not cause they couldn't see/find fish, it's cause they couldn't make 'em bite

A "good" guide will have plenty tricks in the bag to help get a guy or gal hooked up.
That's worth paying for to some folks

I'll add another recommendation for Jim Jiggy Stillhead Jankovic.  I had a friend fish with him last year.  The guy had never fished before.  Jim showed him what to do and he caught steelhead after steelhead.  The line of guys standing near him, who were catching nothing, sat down and just watched my friend, amazed.  Jim is very, very good.

BTW, I was out with Jim last week and we caught steelhead on dry flies with explosive strikes that looked like someone dropped a stick of dynamite in the water.  Incredible!

Imagine a saltwater marlin trip and getting skunked. $1800 - for a boat ride???  Its fishing, not catching.  If anyone guarantees numbers of fish they should charge 20x normal rate.

I don't think it's too much to ask for, 50-100 fish between 3 guys and a few kids during an 8 hour day. Being paid 300-400 bucks I'd expect to provide that to clients if I was a guide..

I live in Butler and it's almost 100 miles exactly to Erie. A learning curve would be nice because every time I've been up there I've been lucky enough to hook into nice amounts of steel without being elbow to elbow, and pretty much with not much to it. With that being said it would be nice to get some of my relatives into steel as well.

Thanks to all for the kind words/recommendations.

I'm not going to get into a debate about whether or not someone needs a guide or not.

Some guides can definately increase your chances for a good day, worth the investment especially after a long road trip for some outta town guys. The knowledge you could gain could be alot more benefical then catching fish. Guides do have a few tricks up their sleve

I have to say Jim J. is one of the best around. I had an opportunity to fish with him this weekend and it was awe inspiring. He is the pied piper of the steel. He magically coxes them to his fly or jig.  His personality and skills really are great as well.

Me and my boy are out next Friday-Halloween- with Jim J. Hope we hit the conditions fairly decent. From what I've read on this thread, it should be a great learning experience for us.
