Mohawk 10/11

Headed out solo for some fishing yesterday afternoon. Thought about bringing a few beers, but thought better of it. When I got to the launch, there were about 40 boats waiting to come in. I sat there waiting for about 45 minutes or so, wishing I brought them beers after all. Only one boat caught their limit. I knew it was gonna be some tough fishing for me after these guys raped every hole.

So I finally get on the water, and this 35-40' boat is plowing near by as I'm fishing my 1st spot. As I saw his wake coming in my direction, I thought I was in big trouble. I was staring at a bunch of 6' waves coming in my direction. Surprisingly, my boat handled it well. I flipped the guy the bird anyway.

Back to fishing. I had a lot of trouble locating any fish until dusk. Then I found an active school of crappie, and put a baker's dozen in the bucket.

No walleye again, but I did see 7 or 8 boats heading to one spot right at dusk. They were heading towards the falls. And not knowing the area that way at all, decided not to try to follow at low light. I'm guessing these guys have a nice little walleye honey hole. I'll find it next year.

Heading out there again this evening with a co-worker who has only fished a handful of times. Hopefully I can get him on some fish. If not, it's just nice to be out on the water during these last days of summer.

When hell freezes over, I'll fish there too.

Well, I took my co-worker out, but couldn't get him on to a fish. I wound up with 3 for the afternoon. smallie, walleye, and I think the 3rd is a drum. I was also bitten off by another 'eye. Got him near the boat once. Trying to be conservative, I would bet she weighed well over 7lbs. Both 'eyes were hooked in less than 8 fow under a high sun.

Doug-- Looks like some good fish ya got there... that drum is pretty nice!  What did he hit on?  In the next couple years we'll be getting real big ones I bet.  Mike from Conroy's Bait told me they caught one 20+ lbs at the Troy Dam in the summer.

Kev, not on C shift yet. Not sure if it's going to happen. We'll see.

Barry, the drum hit a chart. perch Cotton Cordell. I looked up the NY record for drum, and I think it was 26 lbs or so. And I thought mine was big. And I'm getting psyched for 1st ice as well!!! Round Lake is usually the 1st to freeze up near by. Let's see if we can get skunked there again.

When hell freezes over, I'll fish there too.

Hook:  I have a friend that fished the Mohawk around Schenectady somewhere and he has been killing the walleyes lately but he goes at night and fishes below the dams.  He gets some real hogs.  His son boated a 29 incher the other day.
