PA DUCK SEASONS

What is the deal with the south zone coming in a week earlier than the north and northwest zones??? I don't understand why the season would start earlier in the south. It is my understanding that ducks are migratory.(maybe they aren't in Pa.) wouldn't it make more sense if the northern zones came in first?

It was never that way before, some one decided or figured out that the NW zone has vulnerable breeding population of ducks. The late start date is designed to make sure there are migratory birds here to take the pressure off the local quackers...

If I agreed with you we would both be wrong

I didn't realize the south zone had always started earlier. I just remember that the north zone use to start the saturday before Columbus Day. It does make sense to allow for migratory birds to be here prior to the start of the season.

It's a new thing, the south zone has been second weekend for quite some time. The NW zone and North zone were just moved over the last few years. I can remember when the NW zone opened the first weekend, thus one week earlier than the south....Anyway that is the official explanation for the later opening date.

    Mika,
Where ya heading?  I will be up your way trying to wack some quakers.  I will be in the Geneva swamp somewhere.  Not sure yet where though.

I bet the Teal are still around.  Hasn't been cold enough yet.

I know that my spot on the Yough River has no ducks at all right now.

I,ll be on Shenango. May hit the river with a bud of mine. He knows of a swamp that is full of woodies.( got to get one for doubletaper and Skip for tying.) Geneva is always a good bet. Lots of birds there. Good luck.

I went to Geneva to try my luck. Always hear about the place so with the splitseason this year the four of us want to see if the stories where true. I can say they are, shooting started about 7min. early and was amazed at how far some guys think a shotgun can kill a duck!!! (80 to 100yrd shots!!!) All in all not a bad morning we all shot a limit of woody's and had a couple mallards mixed in. Had some good laughs and didn't get shot!!!!! Saw a fair amount of ducks mostly woody's,some teal and mallards.
