Perch?

Thinking of making one last trip with the boat, anybody have any info on the perch fishing? Not holding my breath for the eyes but could use some more perch in the freezer. Thanks

Looks promising for the weekend, where are you launching from? Have you heard of anyone catching any eyes, other than in OH?

If I were you and you're making your last trip for perch, I'd head to Conneaut.  Quite frankly, the best perch fishing on the southern coast of Erie....I don't know what it is about that place, but they are always there, year in and year out in the spring and fall.  Call the harbor to see what depth they've been getting them in lately.  Good Luck.....if you need the number, PM me.

I think I'm taking the small boat up this weekend to fish the mouths...looks like its going to be a nice weekend for that!

Thanks guys, probably won't head to Conny, just can't justify the license at this point in the year. I've had the OH license the last two years and used them once, figures that the year I don't buy them the fish set up camp west of the border and stay there. I'll have them for next year you can be assured!

bulldog, a 1 day tag is 11$. Might be worth it. Its nice to see guys chasing the perch this late in the season. If you can get out, the fishing is usually white hot. Be safe and let us know how you do!

We went Saturday, nice conditions in the AM wind picked up in the afternoon. Found the perch in 75 feet straight out of Walnut. There were two groups of boats, one in 60 feet and one futher out. I just slowly cruised around till I marked a good school between the two groups. We anchored up and started pulling perch. Did fairly well and stayed put. Had one boat come past and ask how it was going then they anchored about 150' if front of us. Evidently staying in one spot attracts attention because we had another guy come over and give the "hows it going" gesture to wich I replied so-so. He immediately anchored about 30' off our port side. We were catching more off the starboard side so he pulled anchor and moved to about 20' off the starboard side. I was starting to feel like I was steelhead fishing off the wall. He did move over a little, but why try to anchor so close in windy conditions. Finished with 3 limits by 2pm several JUMBOS lots of mid and small.

Good day off of Shades Beach, PI Angler was right on.
It's nice to have someone help you out a little on where the fish are. My boat gets about 3 mpg so it gets a little pricey trying to hit all the spots that worked two weeks ago. I'm not asking to be taken by the hand to where the fish are but being pointed in the right direction sure helps. Thanks for everyones help.

Sunday evening my wife and I had our limit in 90 minutes.

I had to wait for a buddy to show up at the dock Monday morning before we could head out. The problem was that his idea and my idea of morning are completely differant. We didnt anchor until around ten and I guess the bite came to a stop around 9:30. By 3:00 we did manage to get 68 fish. A real mix of sizes, from 4" or 5" up to 12".
I hate to keep the small ones but 90% of them seem to die when you through them back.
Anyone have any ideas on keeping them alive?

Beetle, i have no idea myself. I tried evreything from reeling them up slower to running the live well all the time. The trip up from 70 ft or so cause's thier air bladder to pop out. I keep everyone i catch up to my limit then I stop fishing for them. I cant stand to watch other people sorting through all the little ones. To me that is a waste. A little greedy too. Thanks for the report it sure does help.

I think it's actually their stomach that you see protruding from their mouths, I've heard that you can puncture their air bladder and push the stomach back down and they'll live. I seriously doubt that they live very long, but long enough to get out of sight. Most of what we caught were mid to large sized, very few dinks.

    I have another question,
On Monday I think we caught a couple Gobies, but when I looked gobies up on the internet the picture didnt look anything like what I cought. Looking at pictures on the PA Fish Commission web site they looked more like the Slimy Sculpin.
Are these fish one in the same?

    Thanks

One thing that I noticed while perch fishing was the water tempreture.
I was in 72' of water, I checked the water temp around 3:00 in the afternoon.
It was 64 degrees at the surface and around 61 on the bottom. I didnt notice any real thermocline. Since the bite had slowed down I was wondering if going a little deeper would have been a good move.
    Maybe they just were'nt hungry.

Thats what it looked like. I checked a little further on the web and it said that they got to the great lakes via the ballast water in trans-oceanic ships. They first started showing up in 1990.
I was happy with knowing they were a goby and throwing them back. My wife had to know the history on the **** thing.

    Thanks again

They look the same, but aren't. The goby has a singular pelvic fin. The sculpin has two normal looking pelvic fins.
Google image "round goby fin" and you'll see what the difference is.
