Grouse populations

Since the Coyote hunters have been focusing alot of time in the area I live and have pounded the hell out of the Yotes the last few years.

The Grouse seem to be rebounding..I am flushing Grouse on a regular basis when scouting for deer.. I haven't seen that around here for almost 20 years...

Go Yote Hunters!!!!

I think another big reason youre seeing an influx is people just dont hunt them anymore. Not many people have bird dogs and id say only half the people who do hunt.

I see a ton of grouse and I'm starting to see bunnies at 2000 feet!!  Lots of bunnies.  I find it a bit odd to find bunnies in big woods at those elevations.  I think they live in the undergrowth along the roads.  Coyote population never really exploded where I archery hunt.  With low deer numbers compared to the past, I hope it never does.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

I have been seeing more grouse lately than i have in years. I used to see plenty about 15 years ago when I would go to camp. The numbers aren't quite there but it seems like they are on the rebound.

Have been seeing more grouse the last 5-6 years. We have camp in ANF, it's not uncommon to kick out a few every time you are in the woods. My grandfather who built the camp in the 1960's said there were grouse around as long as the camp has been there. Last deer season I saw more grouse than deer. I think you have a better chance shooting a grouse than you do a deer in the ANF.........

Think it has anything to do with decreasing deer populations in many of those places, i.e. more ground cover & better habitat?  Not saying for sure that it does, but there could be a correlation there.

With all the clear cutting going on in the ANF. I know that is providing better gover for the grouse, this gives them better protection and time to reproduce. Don't even get me started as to why you see few deer in the ANF.........

Sorry, P.I., maybe I should have phrased that better.  Certainly didn't mean to get into the debate of deer herd reduction, and especially deer in the ANF.  Haven't been a big fan of the herd reduction myself, but maybe we are seeing some benefits to it now.  Just wondering in general, across the state, if the reduction of the deer herd has benefitted other species as forests get a little healthier.

Can't remember the last time I specifically hunted grouse - maybe 8 or 9 years ago??? Used to hunt grouse quite a bit in the Ligonier area when I was a teenager and in college - only ever got one in my life.  Probably a few around somewhere where I live now (southern Butler Co.), but I think I've seen two in the past 7 years while deer hunting.

Been thinking about grouse hunting the last few weeks though, and maybe giving it a shot again here this fall.  Still have some old haunts up in the Ligonier area I used to hunt that I could hit up.  Lots of gamelands not to far away in northern Butler and Armstrong Co. that probably hold a few too.

raquared, not need to say your sorry. I am not looking to get into a debate about the ANF deer herd either. Just wanted put it out there that I have been seeing more grouse the last few years in the ANF. Have not hunted grouse yet this year. Hope to do so the 1st sat of nov. The grouse are fun to hunt, but you have to put in the time, and get into the thick stuff, they don't come easy. I got a dog last year. She is 14 months old. She flushed a grouse back in late sept right behind camp, when I was there last. Hoping she can do it again.

A friend found a slammer bucks core area on Saturday.  We did some walking yesterday, and flushed about 20 grouse out in a few hundred yards.  That said, it's so thick, I don't think anything could be hunted in there.

The grouse and deer in there probably laugh at us hunters.

It would be nice to see the grouse population rebound across the state, i hope this is a trend that contnues.  As far as bunnies go, I think they have become nocturnal in many areas because of the hawk situation.  I have a good dog, and it seems that we only bounce rabbits right before dark, and they hole up extremely fast.  Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone else notice that?

First off, the term bunnies is hilarious. Reminds me of my little niece.

I've noticed a ton of em in 2b.

    Guess that's not mountains.

Hey Guys I have a Brit that I am trying to get a point on.    I keep hearing about all the grouse in the north west, yet beats me where you guys are seeing these grouse.  I have been all over the ANF near Tionesta, Hickory kettleville.  Nothing, no real areas that looked like grouse woods either.  I don't want to know any secrets, I'll work hard to find them but can anyone point me to the general direction of the ANF for grouse?

I was out for the last 2 hours yesterday and must have put out 20-24 grouse. It seemed like every step I took. Unfortunately I had my rifle instead of my shotgun. I haven't seen this many grouse since I first started hunting in the early 90's.

i have been reporting my grouse hunts to william palmer, a wildlife bioligist thru the game commission for about 20 years.  he compiles a little blurb each year and sends it out, sometimes its in the paper before grouse season.  breakdown is by six regoins of the state, n/w n/c n/e s/w s/c s/e.  i look forward to his news letter each year but his reporting hunters seem be be dropping off in numbers.  maybe some of you "purists" would like to contact him.  c/o wildlife management,   pa game commission,   2001 elmerton ave,  harrisburg   17110-9955.

my browning so called "light twelve" got so heavy it needs wheels,  i tried my l c smith that my dad gave me and cant hit a barn so i ended up with a ruger side by side gold lable that is in the 85 % kill area.  easy to carry too

Yea Palmer does a good job.  I also send him a report, I keep track of all the flushes I encounter.  He has said for the last several years that the northwest section is the best grouse flushing rate in the state.  As per my prevous reply, you couldn't prove it by me.  I just just go for a walk with the dog, hoping she will stumble across one and she gets a point.  Can't hit them anyway but I love to train her.  With the shortage of grouse it has taken a lot of walken but she has gotten her first point.  This is my first bird dog and a day success is just getting a point.  As far as I am concerned, it beats hunting the stocked pheasants any day.
