Tulpehocken

Well just got back from the Tulpehocken. Boy was it worth it tonight. Started around 330 and only managed one fish in the first 2 hrs or so. Could not hook those buggers. Fished only dry flies. I mean they would hit my or go up and miss it. Anyways around 715 i nice hatch was coming off and fish were rising everywhere. I went into my favorite riffles to fish and BOOM!!! Out of the water comes a Really nice Brownie. I tussle with him for a good 15 20 minutes. I come to realize he is to big for my little trout net. Well i land him and he measured out at 21.5 inches. Large trout for this stream. He was more then likely a stockie but man what a beautiful fish.  Kudos to him. I hope he makes it thru the summer but i doubt that highly He will be on a stringer soon.... Also that 50 degree water gets cold when you spring a leak...... **** waders. Time for some new ones. Only 1 year old too.

Last time we fished there the water temp was over 68 degrees...I think the guys working the dam releases are F^(ing up.

Nice fish though egger, Its a shame they won't make the DHALO section a catch and release area.... oh well hopefully that fish will make it through another year.

I agree I mean there is plenty of water for the meat hunters to keep fish. I mean they have above the lake and below the red bridge. or heck pick another stream. The fish in that stream are larger then average though. People can start keeping after this weekend right? DO you get down to the Tulpehocken often? If so have you been up to the palisades or water plant this year? I have not ventured up that way yet. I admit i am lazy to walk down to the palisaides. Only fished there 2 times. Just dont want to walk all that way and not have any fish rising. I mean i can toss nymphs but prefer to dry fly fish. Do you know any other streams in area that have the same type of topwater action? IF you do not want to post on here drop me a line at michaelfederer@aol.com

I think the Tully is probably the best stream with in an hour drive of Philly.  The DHALO should be catch and release, I'm tired of the state catoring to the "meat hunters".  I even emailed the state biologist say this same thing, doubt it did any good.

I've been staying in Wyomissing away on business. The tully is about 8 minutes from my hotel. I've fished it several times over the past few weeks, but havent seen one good hatch. I have however caught a lot of fish. Maybe I'm just too used to the little J and the other streams close to my home that have good hatches. Other than a few caddis, I havent seen many bugs. Are there any good hatches on the tully?

A friend of mine told me there was a recent sulfur hatch on the tully.  I know there are caddis and tricos hatches also.  I have fished the tully all year, and have seen fish feeding on the surface, practically coming out of the water(early spring).  I think they were feeding on emergers, not sure exactly what.  Could be stonefly.

Drake, the Tully will get good trico hatches in the evining.

Egger, unfortunately not too many great trout streams in the area. You can try the Lehigh river, I've heard good things about it but could not guide you to any hot spots there.
I have not fished up by the water plant yet this year. Hopefully the fish will survive the rope for a while after it opens for harvest in June.

I fished the Lehigh the last time I was home, which was 2 years ago. My buddy who has a shop in Kunkletown took me down there. It was really good and if my memory is correct it was around the same time of year. I do remember him telling me that once the water warms up a bit it slows down till the fall. I am definetly gonna try and fish it when i get home in a few weeks :)  I will keep u posted with details

Tippy, have you ever caught a fish on a trico on the Tulp?  I didn't think so.

I say the hell with C&R - it should be open to bait fishing year round with no limit...:)
In all seriousness, with the low water conditions are warm air temps - we need to be carefuk fishing the Tully the next month or two.  Try to limit your fishing to cooler days and higher water flows and not mid-day fishing when the trout are in survival mode.

The trout shouldn't have to be in "survival mode" in a tail water fishery like the Tully.....the **** dam guys are dropping the ball...where is TU??? asleep at the wheel???

Tippy - We are TU.  Maybe if you feel that strongly you should help out.  I was told by a Tully TU lifer that the dam got a new "dam-keeper" and that is why they goofed up in March and April letting too much water out.  The other problem is that the dam isn't deep enough.  The water comning out of it now (though minimal) is still over 60 degrees, so you figure after it moseys down through that mostly slow/dead water, it warms quickly so we need to be careful.

Sorry, haven't been logged in for a while.  Did you ever get the J?  I know BG had a family tragedy - I was sorry to hear.  Glad to hear the flies are working out for you.
