DECOYS

Have anybody ever try using a buck decoy when rattling and grunting?Or does a doe decoy have more effect then a buck decoy?

    Both work, guess it depends.

Do you wanna simulate two bucks just having it out or two bucks fighting for a doe?

I'd guess timing would be most important.  Buck:doe ratio's probably important to.  From now until actual breeding picks up, I'd be putting a buck decoy out.  Once breeding starts, a doe decoy may be better.  Each situation is unique.

    Here's a pic.

He put the decoy in pieces, scattered all over the place.  I'm not sure where that pic is at.

I need to try to out smart a mature buck. What can of scent to put on him if i use a buck decoy?I'm hunting in the mountains this year by my brothers he lived there for ten years and has barely ever seeing anybody hunt it.We found this spot by trying to get a bear on camera for the bear archery season. We got a couple bear and 4 125 or 130 inch bucks on camera also.I guess if i use a doe decoy i should put doe in heat on her. When is the best time to start to use a decoy?

If the woods are open enough for visual contact, I wouldn't use any scent with a decoy.

btw.. never place scent ON the decoy.  You may end up with an antler in your**** as you carry it in or out to your spot.

I rarely use decoys or scents.  Sometimes they work, sometimes they bite you in the****  That decoy is actually a 3-D target we shoot and let out all year and happen to set up a camera for fun.  Tinks on it, I think.

A friend of mine gets **** from a hot doe, from a friend's farm here locally, every year.  Every year, he scares the skin out of deer.  The fact is, deer are social animals.  They identify themselves by smell.  If they smell something unfamiliar, they bolt.  It's the nature of the prey.  Yet, because they are social animals, they may walk right up to a decoy.  Some bucks will come in to investigate, some the scent/decoy will spook.  I've had deer stick their nose in scents, others run for their life once they smell it.  Many don't even pay attention to it.  Some stop, just for a second.  I recall placing scent out and having a doe follow the trail to the base of the tree.  Some deer will actually avoid decoys on purpose.  Did I just contradict myself like 8 times?  Yes, because it's circumstancial and a risk you have to decide to take.  I layed scent down one time last year, November 3..  The doe, who was headed my way, jumped out of her skin once she hit the trail, snorted a handful of times, and took off.  What if there was a buck following her?  I don't know if there was but I might have found out if I hadn't layed that trail down.  You just never know what kind of mood a deer will be in.  Remember, you are in their bedroom and throwing a decoy out or scent down isn't going to bring the county's deer population to you.  Experiences and opinions will vary by hunter.  i think a lot of it has to do with presssured/unpressured deer.

One thing I forgot to add is if you get the opportunity to take a doe, or someone you know takes a buck in late October, cut the hawks off and take the urine sac out and dump it on the hawks.  Hang it up, keep it in the refrig overnight.

Put an orange vest on it and huff it in like everything else.  Hopefully your spot isn't too far away.

Those with the means, how about using both a buck and a doe decoy at the same time?  Should really PO a dominant buck if he sees a smaller buck trying to "service" a doe in his territory.

By the way, where I hunt at my uncle's place in Elizabeth Twp., his neighbor had his 3D buck target in his back yard destroyed by a decent 8 point on Sunday.  Gored the heck out of the body and ripped the head off and knocked the antlers out of the head.  I guess it took him awhile to figure out it wasn't real.

I have a doe decoy. I have tried it about 3 times and never seen a thing. Another guy I talked to said he threw his decoy in the trash. The first time he set it out he had a nice buck and 2 doe coming across the field straight at him. He said they all stopped looked at his decoy and ran away!! I guess you got a 50-50 chance. They work or they don't.
