Buck/Doe ratios

The topic has come up in another discussion so I thought I would start a new thread.

Here is a link to Kip Adams of QDMA explaining buck to doe ratios or sex ratios as they should be called.  Even with a heavy male harvest and light female it is almost impossible to get a ratio much above 3/1.

The numbers are there with some hypothetical examples as well.  Took me awhile to believe it but.....

While I believe that article to be correct that isn't what Alt and the PGC were telling us when they were trying to sell HR/AR. The 10-1 and 15-1 were the numbers they were spouting. In fact Alt refered to our ratio as so bad it was "corrupt". The only ones I remember questioning those high numbers was that nasty organization  Jim Silinsky was a part of. Remember him? Apparently not all QDMA members agree though as here is some exercpts from a 2003 newsletter put out by the Pike County QDMA.

Our field observations at the Milford Experimental Forest indicate a ratio of six or seven antlerless deer for every antlered buck, which translates to about four reproductive does for every mature buck.
Putting the QDMA Philosophy Into Practice:   The goals of the QDMA are almost identical to the changes that Dr. Gary Alt has been making in PGC regulations.

I agree S-10 about what was spouting.  As I have said before, some selling of the program was going on.  I wish that was not the case.  Just like the big antlers I saw him waiving too.  Unfortunate IMO.

As for the other QDMA info, a antlerless deer could be a BB.  A sex ratio is more appropriate.  Many hunters do remember the days of seeing antlerless deer outnumbering antlered deer 10 years ago by a big margin.  The true sex ratio though was still close to 3/1.
