Electric Socks

Man, I must be getting old.  Last year I had a heck of a time with cold feet. Never really had that problem until last year.  I was wearing a pair of Cabelas breathable waders with the 3.5mm bootie, studded leather boots and a pair of good wools socks.  Needless to say my feet got quite cold in the tribs during November and December.    I started looking for electric socks but the reviews on the Cabelas socks leads me to believe that the Cabelas electric wader socks don't really work to well.  There is a bunch of electric socks on the market and I was wondering if any of you guys are using electric socks that work and where you got them?

I use the hand warmer brand chemical heaters.  They make them for your feet.  Just open, shake to activate, slip them in the toes of your socks, and you have 6-8 hours of warm feet. Fairly inexpensive too!

You must need a pretty long extension cord to use electric socks.    Actually I used battery powered socks before from Cabelas.  They took the edge of the cold off your feet but didn't really keep them warm.  That's just me of course.  I've tried the hand warmer type as stated above, and those seem to do a pretty decent job.

my electric socks are laying in the woods up at pymatuning.  fought the wire filament in the toes one morning while duck hunting, took them off and fired them into some brush.  maybe they have come along in 20 years, i don't know.  did have a pair of cabela's gore-tex, thinsulate type bootie sox.  they were warm, but i don't think they were wide enough for my duck feet.  went back to wool.

I also have problems with cold feet during the winter so I went to boot foot wader with Heat Factory adhesive toe warmers. Fish all winter up here in Erie. The warmers last about 6 hrs.

    never tried elect socks

one thing I discovered though, you MUST have ample room in your boot after you add layers of socks.

if your foot is tight in the boot/wading shoe, the insulating effect of wool, fleece. poly  or any hi-tech fabric doesn't work.

Having said that, the only thing I've found that kept my widdle piggies "100%" comfortable standing for hours in frigid creeks were heavy insulated boot ft waders made for duck hunters.
Same applies here though, you MUST have ample room in the boot.

    The big prob with duck hunting waders is;

1.) they're all neo that I've seen and breathables are SOOOOO much easier and more comfortable  to traverse the creeks in

2.) you can only find insulated duck hunting waders with a lug sole boot foot.
That means if you want to be "sure footed" in the creeks, (and "I" do) you need the strap on sandal cleats.
Thus making already heavy neos and boots that much HEAVIER to traverse in

I've depensed with the duck hunters i had for the reasons above, , and  gone to different size foot wear.
One size for non frigid water temps and another larger size for frigid temp water.
I've also found boot foot waders allow more room for the layered socks to do their thing

I know you didn't ask for any of that, but I'm bored and felt like rambling.....

I have heard the foot warmers work good, you also gotta make sure you boots aren't too tight and wiggle your toes and move around. I hear Inukshuk uses the electric socks to keep his vagina warm....

You know I like to wear acouple pairs of thin wool socks. Not that I'm trying to stear away from getting electric socks, by the way haven't heard anything bad about them, but keeping your feet moving is a great help. Obviously standing still in freezing water isn't helping, so I like to get out of the water every 30 minutes, though I understand you probably don't want to lose your spot. I would try electric just to see how it feels. Just because 5 people on the internet doesn't like them doesn't mean you won't.

Just my 2 cents.  I tried the electric socks years ago and they weren't worth it.  After 23 years in the Army I've figured this much out if you aren't moving at least a little you will get cold feet.  That being said we used to use a wicking type of sock to draw the water (sweat) away from out feet, then wool socks.  In really cold weather go with a larger boot and then another pair of wool socks.  Give your feet room to move and breathe.  They are making a new type of sock that supposedly wicks the moisture above your boots to disperse it in the air.  Might work in breathables not in neo's.  And if most of your body is warm(er) then it won't take so much to keep your feet warm.  If you are cold then your feet will be coldest.  I'd give the chemical boot warmers a try.

I use wool socks and neoprene socks, or booties, inside boot fit neoprenes. I have had good luck with the chemical toe warmers also. The guys are right about having room to wiggle.

Make sure you have room for your foot to move around. If you cut off the blood supply you will get cold feet.
Start with a thin pair of polypropylene sock to wick away moister. (Sweaty feet get cold quick)
Then a thin cotton sock, followed by a good Quality wool sock!

But the rick is to buy your boots too big to keep the restriction down!

    Electric socks? They suck!

a quick note on wool socks

Merino (sp?) wool is recognized as the best

read the wool content on the label.
many socks labeled "wool", in reality have minimal  wool content in them.
Some are less than 10% wool, yet the label in LARGE letters says "wool socks"

    don't fooled by misleading marketing

PS, you really don't want 100% wool either for socks.
Simply because once stretched out, they won't stay up above your ankle.
A certain amount of spandex type thread in the material  is appropriate.
I "think" it's labeled as lycra, or something like that.
    About 80/20 is just right
(80% Merino wool and 20% "stretchy stuff")

imHo, you should avoid cotton all together.
For max protection, I've found shear/thin poly liner, then a bit thicker poly (or light/med wt wool)  then thick heavy wt wool is best

    'coarse, your mileage may vary....

thats right Tippy, and I like to store my vagina in my boots because it usually sticks to the inside of my waders.  Thats why I use foot warmers.

With the foot warmers... If you put them into a zip lock baggie before they run out of heat you can extent the life of them. In other words They last six hours and your out fishing for 2 hours, bag the warmers in a zip lock and you can re use them again. It works, I've done this.
