A piece of sponge soaked in anise or a glow stick tied inside an egg sack.
I saw a guy cutting pieces off of his pink T-shirt and using them.

Gummy bears.  I thought it'd work, but it was still a bit odd.

Don't gut them, either leave them on the bottom for Lakers or float them 10 ft. down under a slip float for Browns or Atlantics...

Weirdest, but deadliest tactic on the LO tribs I have seen...  Backbouncing  orange colored Garlic flavored  or pink/shrimp flavored marshmallows through the holes.  Definitely the most aggressive strikes I have ever witnessed in a stream.

many years ago i was fishing a low, gin clean pool loaded with steel.
i was having very little success with the bait and flies I tried.

At that time, my fishing pack doubled  bass pack, so I had some of my favorite plastics with me.
I tied on a 1/0 hook  and  slipped on  a  Zoom  Critter Craw that was deadly on Lg Mouth that year.
as soon as I tossed it in the pool, the steelies were all over it!

I hooked and landed a couple/three before they turned off to it.
i used that same set up several times in the low gin clear that year  with similar success.

Yesterday I decided to take my 6ft Ugly Stick with me to  see what reaction I would get on some outlandish junk.
After things slowed down a bit with the bud rod, i grabbed Ugly Stick and tossed some junk

lookie what happened

all right, why can't i get this pic to show???

Skating a small spawn bag accross the surface w/out any weight on the line.  Works good on packed up early fish when they're rolling and their a little more aggressive to it than a dry.

I wish I could tell you, I didn't believe it was possible, but when I tried it I could NOT believe it and it works EVERY time...Literally.  Therefore, if I told you, I'd have to kill you!

How about sending your Native American girlfriend/wife to stand behind my friends and I and beg for the fish we caught.... While you stand on the other side of the stopsign hole with 3 inch glacier climbing spikes strapped to your boots.

That's a pretty weird tactic

Strangest one I ever saw was when a friend of mine came up and he wasn't interested in steelhead he just wanted to fish a big nightcrawler for carp/suckers.  Well two huge fish (may have been kings this was a while back) came up thru the hole and he threw out this blob of nightcrawlers and one of the big fish moved about 10 feet out of path and hit it so hard it almost took the rod out of his hands.  Everyone else was fishing tiny stuff like single eggs or waxies.  He fought the fish for about 10 minutes till we got it to shore and then released it. It swam back to the side of the creek and then turned and headed back down stream like a B.O.O.H. and the other big fish followed.  This was on Elk about 15 years ago..

Bare red octupus hook, my single egg fell off, and steelhead hit the hook
anyway.

Another time at 7 mile, when it was still good, there was a huge pod of fish near the mouth that would not hit anything. For some reason, I had put an old ice fishing lure, think it's called a swedish pimple, in my fly box. Every time it hit the water, a steelhead would attack it. I guess I should have changed tippets, because I lost it after 10 or so to one of the largest steelhead I ever had on.

I've seen guys ice fishing for them with some strange rigs.  They had a foot long dowel rod, tied they're line to the center of it, about 30 feet of line. They'd put the line down the hole and stand the dowel up in the snow whatever distance away from the hole they wanted to achieve the desired depth.  The fish would run with the bait and pull the stick into but not through the hole, they pick the stick up then hand line them in. I'm not sure if they had really heavy line or if they were using some type of shock/bungee on the line somewhere, didn't look closely. But they didn't seem to have much trouble landing them.

Not really a weird tactic, but one that def. works. When the fish in a given hole are more or less inactive, just sitting near bottom and not feeding, try the riffles above and below, or the bottom of a hole just above the fast water. It seems that any time steelies are on the move, they are much more aggressive than steelies at rest. I love fishing the very bottom of a hole, watching fresh fish move up from the fast riffles below, and then clobber my offering. That is also the best place to be, intercepting all the fresh fish before they move into the bigger holes where all the guys are waiting. Exact opposite of when you are fishing with a buddy and working up a creek and the guy in front gets first dibs. Remember the steelhead are moving up, and the guy at the bottom of the hole, or in the faster water gets first chance at these fresher fish. Fish in faster water generally ae more aggresive anyway, as they have less time to inspect an offering as the current moves it away. Strikes can be very aggressive.

ran out of strike indicators one time so I decided to use a heavily ginked Green Drake pattern to hold some shot and a sucker spawn down.  Needless to say in the middle of winter one whacked the green D.  Fought it for about 20 seconds then broke it off, but still...a steelie on the dry is rare enough esp in dead of winter.
