i'm new to fishing erie on my own and can only fish on sundays, maybe a saturday if i'm lucky. everytime except one i've been up the waves have kicked my teeth in, cant seem to get a break. learning to troll in these conditions is getting old, not to mention the expense of the whole deal. is this a normal summer or unusually bad luck on the weekends?

does anyone know who exactly types those wave reports? i think they should just quit.  >matt

LOL  Wecome to to lake erie...  From 5:00am. till 8:00am the lake is good when they call for 2 ft. or less. A rule of thumb, all north winds will build to 3-5s and if you see a NE stay home...

Mat, this year has been pretty windy. Especially on the weekends, I know if it wasnt for my buddy having a 21 footer I would not have been able to go out as much compared to last year.

Yeah mat im almost in the same boat as you but you go out when you can go. Dont be stupid there will always be another day to go if the lake keeps you ashore. The lake can be like a mirror at sun up and in 3 to 4 hours it can throw some good size whitecaps in your face. Be smart and watch the weather conditions when your out on the lake.

Have to agree with moose, pay more attention to wind direction than the prediction of wave height. Also agree with deetz, be smart and don't venture out unless you're comfortable with it. There are other reasonably close lakes that can work as alternatives if you make the drive and can't go on Erie. I drive 2 hrs one way to get to Erie and can mostly fish only weekends as well, and it's been frustrating to say the least this year. I did make the trip last Friday and the wave reports were for 3-5's, we might have seen some 3 footers but the lake was almost flat for the best part of the day. Hang in there, we fished till the end of October last year with decent weather.

This has been a rough year Matt.  You really have to be able to pick and choose your days if you really plan on putting any time into fishing the Great Lakes.  IMO, its well worth it because Erie has some of the best fishing opportunities in the world and it seems to only be getting better.  Don't give up, persistance is key, be persistant and you will certainly be rewarded one day.

Anything with a west vector to it can kick 'er up in a hurry too.  I don't like NW or W with any kind of velocity and SW with velocity will kick it up before you get too far offshore.

Go to the west end of Ontario, when the wave report says less than 1s, they mean it, and it happens fairly often.
