Planar Board Releases

What type of planar board releases does everyone use? Are Weldon releases any good? And are they easy to adjust? Thanks for the help

If you use rubber bands, you don't even need to buy releases. Just use shower hooks.

I like the white offshore clips. They are expensive. But you can get deals on eBay if you look around. The larvik and Weldon releases are ok if you are pulling shallow plugs. They won't hold a deep reef runner at 2mph. Rubber bands are nice and cheap but if one just won't break for you it is a total pain. The offshore black and orange are nice too.

    Plus one drummer.

I have offshores also. I run the the whites for mono plug fishing and the blacks for braid and hard pulling jet 30, 40, & 50's. If its rough your going to need a release that will hang on for ya. One thing you will learn is to tweek is the tension on the release and the amount of line you put under the pad. Its a real mother if you cant get your line to come out of the release. And if its too lose you will get some "drive bys" as our friend ironhead says.....
And yes they are expensive. A few of mine are 3 years old. The pads are going to need replaced.

I've pulled reef 800's not to mention Tru-trip 50's behind the Laurvicks with no problem.  If working in higher waves I'll use rubber bands inside the Laurvicks as a sort of shock absorber.  I own lots of offshore and weldon releases and I use them too when I run out of the Laurvicks.  I also like the weight of the Laurvicks that makes them slide down the board line faster.

When I get a new bag of rubber bands, I throw them out in the sun for a couple hours and it seems like that weathers them enough so they aren't so hard to break.

When it comes to rubber(gum) bands. #16 Office Max-brand are the only ones to use...not Staples, not Chinamart, Michaels, etc..
Office Max's rubber bands are VERY consistent in their thickness and stretch.

I use custom releases(made by Capt. Todd McKinney, Wolfman Charters). Similar to Weldon's.

    Ironhead,
you wouldn't have a part number for these rubberbands would you? Ive been looking for the #16's but on office max's website they only have them labeled by size in length and thickness, not by "#16". Unless im looking at it wrong or in the wrong place.

No I don't, bud. I just walk into the store a grab a bag. They are labeled "#16" on their shelves.
Do NOT buy the 1-lb bag...they will start to deteriorate before you can use them all(learned this the hard way). Buy the 1/4 or 1/2lb bag.

I Am particluar to the scotty medium tension for pulling light duty (ie clean reefs, bagleys etc). Over deep water i like the bands with a caribeaner or shower clip. Weldons are nice too, but real touchy on how deep u insert ur line.

half hitch the rubberband onto the fishing line and then open the shower clip and slide the rubberband into it and close the clip with clip attached to the planer board line. Send it down the line.

Not if you use the right ones.  I use Weldon red rubber bands mainly because I can get them here on FishUSA and that's what my marina carries.  See Ironhed's post above for what he uses.  The break very easily when using braid and a little harder with mono...I've had more problems getting my line too deep into Weldon or offshore releases and not getting them to release than I've had with bands that don't break.

Put the gum band around the line as you would when using a normal planer board release, except the loop of the gum band that you would normally clamp the release onto, just put it in the open end of the shower hook before you close the shower hook.

Here's the type of planer board releases I use:

    http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/planer-board-releases/094210000004.aspx

They're basically just a shower hook and an electrical clamp with rubber pads glued into the jaws. If your using a rubber band, you really don't even need the clamp portion since the release of the line from the clamp occurs due to the rubber band breaking, not the clamp releasing the line.
