What an unreal day 9/24 turned out to be. Did not fish the creeks for obvious reasons but the fishing was incredible. 15 were caught and many were lost for the first trip of season 2. powerbait all colors, spoons, sacs, and jigs. My shoulders and back are killing me. Didnt expect such a day so it just goes to show, u never know.

This is the time of year you get a lot of lying about whether there are fish at the mouths or in the stream and whether the rain was enough to cause a run.  A month or so from now, the lies will involve how far they have run.

There were fish in Walnut project waters.  I caught one Monday evening, but they were very sluggish and not interested in biting.  Basically they just wanted to be left alone.

The poster did not say when he was fishing.  At night things are bit different.  Maybe he hit the fish after dark or very early in the morning.  If you check the USGS site for Walnut, you will see there has been some real swings in the water temp. and that might account for this report.  Of course, it could be bogus....  We will never know for sure.

Well Bughawk to be honest with u fished all night with only 4 bites and 2 landed then morning came and fish were being caught by every single person present It never slowed down until 12 noon but people were still catching. The bite was really on from 6am till 12 noon. There is no reason for me to b.s. anyone because I enjoy using this site. If there is no rain then where do u think the fish are concentrating in really good numbers? Im sure some of u guys have to know some local fellars or are local and know just what Im talking about and could confirm my report if u dont believe me.

Duud, you're better off letting them not believe you.  Who cares whether anyone believes you.  You will win no prize if they do, only find more of a crowd the next time you go out.

It's early guys, the water is  low, warm, and gas is expensive, better off waiting.  The weather has been beautiful for golf.

Stange things do happen.  Sorry if you thought I was not believing you.  Past experience when it is low, slow and clear has been very few fish caught.  Now that you mention you caught them in the morning, that does make a bit more sense.  The water temp is a major issue with steelies I have found.  By late afternoon the water seems to be warming up quite a bit and the fish are shutting down.  Also, this time of year my experience has been when the light comes up in the morning the fish usually stop biting, especially when the sunlight is directly over the stream.

As I said, sorry if I offended you, but your report seemed so out of character for the conditions and other reports I have been getting as well as what I found on Walnut Monday. It seemed a bit odd.  But when it comes to steelies, the rule is they don't follow rules.

Good luck the next time you come up.

Another thing could have been a few fresh might have come in that morning.  Sometimes when you get a new run, they are more likely to bite.

I'm curious Mack, what reports or posts have you read here that you personally confirmed were lies?

From what I've read, (and personally witnessed)  it seems most are telling the truth.
Some may "with hold" info from those waiting to be spoon fed,
and some reports may be subjective as to what constitutes  a "lot" from one angler to another,
but it's very rare I see any out right lies here.

and if you fished regularly enough, you'd know that one day there might be 2 or 3 fish in a particular hole and 50 fish in it the next day.
or visa versa
especially this time of year

From your post it sounds like scored on some nice early season lake fishing. CONGRATS,on a good 1st trip. I made my first trip on sunday morning and also fished the bigpond. Arrived a little after 5am and there was a dozen or so hooked before daylight. But from 6:30 to 8:30 they where really active. Then it slowed to about 1 or 2 every 15min. I left at 10:00 and they was still getting fish. I saw a good 75 hookups that morning with about 60% landed.

I have to agree with bughawk's analysis of the situation after visiting the stream today.  More than likely you were hooking into fresh fish while the water temperatures were lower.  I noticed that the 2 sluggish fish I got today had the head pointed down, tail up just getting started.  They put up almost no fight.  However, the 4 I got with a real nice shine to them put up one heck of a spectacular show.  The bite for me stopped around 2p today, which I would attribute to warming water.  The fresh ones are the majority of those being caught.  Overall, if you feel that catching a handful warrants making a trip, do it during the week when the streams aren't so crowded.  Once people got on the stream today the fish went lockjaw.
