i seen this in sundays pgh. post-gazette outdoor section.a guy (caught) a 13lbs.4oz.golden rainbow trout.the thing that didnt make sense to me was,he really (caught) it with his hands?do you feel he should get a state record fish using his hands?he is quoted saying it broke his line,he got excited, threw his rod on shore.grabbed the fish with his hands.just curious to see what others think.

He landed the fish.It should count. Its not like he was site seeing and jumped in the water fishon. Ive broken off close to shore reaching for the fish. Sometimes i get them sometimes i dont.It still counts in my book.

from what i understand reading the article, he caught the fish on a night crawler and when it was close to shore the line broke and he quickly grabbed it with his hands, thats a legit catch

I think it should count, BUT here is what the pfbc website says.....

IT IS UNLAWFUL...
  • To possess, to introduce or import, transport, sell, purchase, offer for sale, or barter the following live species in the Commonwealth: snakehead (all species), black carp, bighead carp, silver carp, zebra mussel, quagga mussel, European rudd, rusty crayfish, ruffe, round goby, and tubenose goby.
  • To fish with more than two fishing lines at any time when fishing for gamefish, baitfish, or both.
  • To fish (includes taking baitfish and fishbait) from March 1 to 8:00 a.m. on the opening day of trout season in any approved trout water. Excepted are certain specially regulated waters and “in-season only” stocked waters.
  • To take or attempt to take fish, or keep fish accidentally caught, by snatch-fishing, foul hooking, or snag fishing. Handfishing is not permitted.

new rule this year. "force outs" do not count and are ruled incomplete.

The question is, did he step in the water before or after he retrieved the fish? In my opinion it's inconclusive.

the bottom line is, you have to have two feet in the water while possessing a fish, and i don't know if that can be determined

And did he have control of the fish or did he pin it against the ground?

The FIVE SECOND RULE must be used to determine this.
rumor has it the fish was snatched up in 3.47 seconds making it
a new record.

If he hooked the fish and reeled it in to within reach and he made a landing move before it came loose of the hook, then it is a fair catch and recovered fumble.

However if he slipped or stumbled in any way then it can not be considered a "landing move" and the ruling on the stream must be overturned.

I believe we have an illegal motion on the fisherman.

After reviewing the tape it was determined that the fish was "out of bounds" at the conclusion of the play and there was "no contact" between the fisherman and any other fisherman.  Therefore it is ruled a legal reception and then a fumble out of bounds.  The fisherman had maneuvered the fish to a point where the catch was made and the resulting fumble was caused by contact with the bank.  Equipment failure does not determine the outcome of the play.  We are still waiting on the charge of unsportsmanlike conduct.

Once he had possession of the fish he needs to make a football move with it....then its a catch

Did the fish break the plane? If so it will be called a catch.
If the fisherman had under two minutes to fish, then it will
be called by the booth from upstairs!

Handfishing is not permitted.

"He grabbed it with his hands". That's holding.... 5 pound penalty deduction.

Why would that be considered for a record. Wasent it raised in a hatchery to that size? In my opinion records should be judged from fish that grew in natural conditions not a pen with a constant supply of food. I may be wrong on this maybe it was in that stream for years and grew big. If its the case of stocked fish being judged some one with a giant pond could selectively breed his own records..Just a thought...

If that were the case we would have some very small records as most of the fish we catch have been hatchery reared.
