I don't know much about smallmouth fishing in late July other than i would assume the bass are in deep water. Have you considered perch fishing it is fantastic right now and i would imagine will be when your here.

There are fish still in shallow water but youll have to realize that the numbers you had early in the year just won't be there.  I have made a July trip a few times and have done reasonably well.  Everyone you talk to will suggest 30+ fow, but I personally cant catch them that deep.  Maybe I just suck at deep fish or something, but I can always pull out a few fish in shallow.

If you have gps and have the spots marked from your other trips then go to them.  Fish slower and on the bottom with baits such as tubes or other goby like baits.  (My fav is a Poor Boy's Goby Jr)   You'll be surprised how many fish stay in shallow all year round.   I've caught smallies within 50 yards of shore mid summer.   If the wind blows onto shore (North wind) then the fish will really get going.  Cloudy days help too.

If you don't have spots marked on a gps or just wanna talk specifics then please pm me.  I'll help you get on fish the first day out!
