I usually see them on the weekends.  Have been checked by them twice this year.  Have been on shenango about 6 times this year so far.  For those that dont know ALL PEOPLE MUST BE WEARING PFD'S AT ALL TIMES WHILE ON SHENANGO, ON BOATS UNDER 16 FT LONG.  Other than that they havent really given us any hard times.  The last time we got checked the officer and us talked walleye fishin for close to half an hour before he went on his way.

Redneck, where is that law posted at, today was the first time I fished Shenango, and was in my 14 ft, but was not bothered by them.

Redneck, found where it is posted, in the Special Regulations section of the Lakes.  Thanks for the heads up.  John

It is an Army Corps Of Engineers regulation. If you were fishing Woodcock or Kinzua you would have to abide by the same regulation.

i was letting my son drive my boat,i was looking for stripers coming on top feeding.they fined me 150 bucks for letting him drive.   hes   19      but i guess he needs a license to drive my 18 foot starcraft  even with me in the boat.

I usually only get stopped when I have my 20 yr. old and one of her girl friends on the boat. No kidding. Your son can get his boating licence on line and its a lot cheaper than that fine !! Interesting too.

john, i guess it is the same in ohio, but you have to take a test to get an operators license.  we are okay because we were born after a certain date.  shoot, i'm so old that the motors on boats when i was a kid were sails.

You only need a boaters license to operate a boat over 25 hp i beleive, unless you are grandfathered in. Also, the shenango fish cops have always been fair with me (they even towed me 2 weeks ago) and it seems once they get familiar with your boat and recognize it (if you go out there a lot) they will not bother you

This was not easy for my kids, but they (and myself)  learned alot.My daughter took it 3 times before she sqeaked by ! It is somewhat ironic though being as I let a former friend, who is older than me drive my boat ONCE, and in 10 min. he did everything that I dispise.and my daughter was always much more aware and competant !

They pulled me over earlier this year.  They weren't very nice at all...  The reason- My spacing of registration letters was not correct (given a warning).  I started to give lip service, but decided that I really didn't want to pay a big fine and go through the hassle of a full boat inspection.  Sometimes saying nothing at all is the smartest thing you can do.

we fish shenago all the time and you are right.once they remember your boat they do leave you alone. a buddy of mine got pulled over for having the wrong life jacket on his boy, 150.00, I would think as long as they wear them it should be fine but not there.they really get on the guys in the 'no wake zone',but that they should! will see all at the get together comin' up.

The regulation about wearing a PFD on boats under 16ft is posted at every launch ramp at shenango lake.  Its on signs as you enter the ramp area.

There was a warden at the park ramp on Sunday watching boats come in.  I talked with him for several minutes and he was as nice and polite as anyone could ever want.  It was a pleasure meeting him.  He didn't check any of my equipment, but he could have and I would never have had a problem with it.  His attitude was great and set the tone from the beginning.

Part of it is that aside from your personality (you seem like a very likable, upstanding person) is the fact that you are an institution around the lake and every local knows you.  Have you ever gone someplace that they didn't know you and run into a warden that is out to light the world on fire by displaying his authority every chance he gets?  For every sportsman that answers no to that question, I would venture that there is one that would answer yes to it.  I guarantee that if you had ever run into Richard Touhey in Rochester, you would have said "I just met the meanest SOB to ever walk the planet".  On the other side (hunting) I know a warden (not a deputy) who truly believes that if you do not belong to a hunting club (such as a QDM organization) and you hunt, then you most likely are an outlaw.  I actually heard him say this in front of a landowners association meeting one evening.  I took exception to his comments and let him know it right then and there.  He and I have never seen eye to eye since...

If i owned the lake, i'd order them to leave everyone alone, except for those guys who run full bore in the " NO WAKE " zones.
Griff, i was just joking about the get together. Believe me, i've had my share of run ins at shenango, years ago. Most of the NEW era guys know me now. When i was working at Sawhill back in the 70's, my general foreman at work was a fish cop also. He saw me fishing one day when i had left my license home and told me to bring it to work with me on monday. Not giving it a second thought, i went to work without it on monday. Tuesday morning i got called into his office. He told me if i didn't bring my license in that next morning, i had to pay the fine for not having one. I called my girlfriend and had her bring it right down, right then. He told me just because he knows someone doesn't make them immune from the laws. I've had a few others but nothing major. Remember, when you take your shirt and hat off, put your license on a belt loop. When they dont see your permit from a distance, they will approch your boat. When you see them coming, stand up and point to your license. They can write you up if its not on you. Even if it's on the floor on your shirt or hat. Just a little overlooked tip, to save you an argument and some fishing time.
