Every once in a while I think somoene catches a stray King this time of year.  But they are very irregular catches from my knowledge.

Depends what "some" means.  If you think you can go up there and catch some on every trip, you're mistaken, I don't care what ANYONE tells you.  If you go up there and fish it a whole season, maybe two, and catch "some" then thats another story.  Savvy?

Bottom line is that salmon, whether kings or coho, are rather uncommon in these parts of Erie.  Yes, strays are caught, but as far as going up with the hopes of catching salmon, you have to be pretty lucky....tight lines.

Heard from a very reliable source that a 23 lb. King was caught just this past weekend during the tournament, somewhere near the Canadian line. There are also reports of a few others being caught as well.

I am sure it was more common back when they were being stocked.  Now days, there is some natural reproduction occurring so there is always the possibility of catching them in the lake.  I am not sure about Canada, but on the US side, the biggest producer (I use the term biggest, loosely) in the eastern basin is the Cattaraugus.  You can always count on seeing a handful of spawners each fall in the Catt.  With such a small population, I would imagine inbreeding may become a problem and probably will eventually wipe them out (although, I am not a geneticist so I don’t know how detrimental inbreeding is to salmon other then maybe producing weaker, less fit progeny).

Once in a great blue moon I hear that someone caught one offshore early in the season however cant say that I ever saw one....other than the ones I would bring back from ny and take down to the marina and put on a stringer just to see people do a double take...that was always fun

There was a small King caught in the open waters Friday before the tourney and a small King caught Saturday that I heard about.  The 23 1/2# King was caught on the 27th of July.

Want Kings close...

Go to the Niagara River or Olcott/18 mile creek in NY in a few weeks.

I saw a Pink Salmon in 20 mile a few years ago -- wasn't very big, only about 3 - 4 pounds but that hump is unmistakable.

PA. used to stock salmon but the perch jerkers where complaining to much, saying they were eating all the perch..
Just what I heard 3rd or 4th handed .. The way the water temps. are I think they would all go to canada or new york anyway....  Live there for 4 or 5 years ...Then 1 out of 50 might make it back to pa waters...

Id like to just see one coho or king caught, Id really love to catch them sometime but its going to be tough for me to get to new york, Erie might even be a challenge with my car kicking the bucket very soon(rear main seal leak)

Maybe this year with the cooler temps and higher water levels then last year a few cohos might be caught in early fall but who knows what mother nature is going to bring.

I've located pods of coho WAY up on a tributary in the same exact spot the past two seasons.  This was in November and December.  Last year I was only able to bring one to hand, (it was either late November or December) but there were several around.

I have never landed a King in the Lake Erie tributaries, however I have seen several dead ones around.  Few and very far inbetween.

I saw a King hooked in the chutes and landed in the Manchester hole on Walnut creek about 9 or 10 years ago.  It was 14 pounds and I remember all of the locals saying how small it was for a King.  It was early September.

My buddy caught a nice coho a few years back on Walnut. I never had such luck but very few are there. If you want kings or cohos go to the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY. It is always a great time.

Coho were more common than most thought until about 04 or 05?   I didn't see any last year, and only a few the year before. I did see 1 chinook/king in elk. I've only seen about a dozen or them in PA over the last 15 years.

I don't know about the other parts of Lake Erie, but they are pretty tough to target in PA waters.  As in, it would be something to say, I'm going to go out and catch a salmon today, then actually do it.

Pics of PA coho I've posted in the past in similar threads.

The last three were caught trolling the mouth of Elk in October 2003. There were tons of coho around that year. We fish for about 5 hours that day. We hooked around 25 fish, but only 4 or 5 were steelhead, the rest were coho.

It would be nice to see PA stock a few of these again...

Oh well, hopefully the BTs work out and we can all get a shot at a few footballs in the years to come.

Has anyone else had a dream about steel? Last night I dreamt I was at elk, using my fly rod. I can't wait.

It would be nice to see them again, doubt it will happen though. Not complaining really, I'm quite happy with what we've got now. But coho are cool.

Haven't had any dreams about steel, but I have tied several hundred flies and jigs in the last few days. I've got paint on my shirt, dubbing stuck in my beard, and a little fluffy of marabou stuck up my nose that I inhaled, it's not coming out, just keep sneezing.

Last year when all the steel was stacked in the access at Elk when it was low, i arrived the day we got the much needed rain it was non stop action. I hooked into a huge fish that i knew was something very big. A fellow avid steel header that was their beside me said that he saw the fish cause it crashed into his legs, And lone behold it was a King My very first if that, A gentleman went to land the fish about after a 5 min fight i seen the fish like 4 times as it broke water everyone was saying o my god, when i finally got it into the bank he went to net it and popped it off so will never know how big it exactly was but one guy that fishes steel everyday said it was about 20 - 25 lbs have no idea but i all i knew it was big and wish i would have beached the monster. And it hit a pink egg sack ! But that's my first ever king, i did get 5- 6 cohos last year 2 on upper Elk and couple outta walnut. But out of 45 trips to the tribs that not saying that much.

kokanee,

Do you hae prints of the pictures you want to post up?  I have a pretty decent scanner.  Not sure about negatives to digital, I'm sure it can be done.

I am confident that many of us would like to see them

Let me know,
Brent
