Just tried to tie my first 'fly' last night. Got some decent equipment, yarn, hooks, and an experienced friend to help. Gained new respect for those folks who can do this right!
Tried to tie some simple sucker spawn...ended up looking like a sucker train wreck. I'm gonna get this though, if it's the last thing I do.

ragadas-- Be patient and work w/ simple patterns(s.s., eggs, glo-bugs).
If possible get a good tyier to show you the basics.
Practice, practice, practice.
This winter take a fly-tying class, if you can find one in your area. A good instructor can make the complicated seem very simple.

Unless your tying dry flies or nymphs i wouldn't be to concerned with how they look. Some of my worst looking sucker spawn and egg flies have outfished better ties.

As long as you can keep the material in proportion to the hook size i think you can fool steelies.

Thanks for the advise. I've been using flyanglersonline quite a bit. Great information, and just checked out Charlies Fly Box....more good stuff, but most of those patterns will have to wait till I get a hold on this.

In the first three months of me learning to tie i went through a 1000 hooks. I would get home from school... tie till 1am, get up, tie before school... on the weekend id tie all night.

Takes a lot of time to become proficient.

If you want some really good instructions for trout patterns head over to www.youtube.com/topflyman -- Dave Cammiss, I've used all the patterns he's shown in his videos for trout. For steelhead I would just go to Google and try that. The internet can only help you so much.. Trial and Error with new patterns you're tying will probably be the decision point whether you're going to fish with it or not. You'll be surprised. Generic patterns are the way to start out. Tying simple flies and slowing progressing to more complex flies is the way to start.

try putting on a little cream color laser yarn up by the eye. just don't choke the eye.

Nice flies, powerun. I learned at the gander mountain in greensburg. Didn't cost me anything but the time to sit in on the seminar. That started my horrible addiction.

When did they offer that? I plan on doing a class this winter, but an extra seminar wouldnt hurt either.

Well, been practicing quite a bit, and while it hasn't made 'perfect' has gotten the results to look better, and the addiction to get worse! Even made some with a approximation to the eggs powerun posted.
Thanks for the suggestions here. Still looking for a tying class in my area.

Don't be afraid to experiment, some of my best looking flies have come from just screwing around and trying something new.

Powerun has shown some great flies and is right on with his posts. White , bead headed whooly's can be killer at times, and his tip about tying the "nuke" eggs will pay off as well

If the fly tends to fall apart after a few fish, your thread tension is not tight enough. I used to struggle with that winging elk hair caddis.
