The last two times I have been to the yough at the Suttersville bridge I noticed a lot of brownish-red runoff coming out of the little run that comes in there.  Does anybody know what this is from?  Even though I managed to catch a few smallies and a channel catfish this cannot be good for the fish

If the water is reddish brown it is probably sediment from construction digging in clay soil.

If the rocks are stained reddish brown it is acid reacting with the iron in the earth.

Those settlement ponds are on the Sewickley Creek.  The crick that rectumitis is talking about is mine runoff from the old Ward mine.  I'm pretty sure the name of that crick is Douglass Run.

It would be nice if they treated that stream to get that cleaned up

I drive through there everyday on my way to work.  Douglas Run is fine right up to the point where the drainage from the Wardon (en?) mine comes in about a 1/4 mile up from where it goes into the Yough.  Never did see many minnies in the "clean" section of Douglas run so I am not sure if there isn't something else in there too.  Lots of slimy algae in it though.  For several days 2 weeks ago I saw a man taking water samples in the AM just above and just below where the mine drainage comes into the creek.  Not sure if they will do anything with that stream or not.  It usually has pretty good flow and they would need some large settling ponds and there just isn't a lot of room in that short run to put any in.  I think they would have to "take" a decent amount of private property to put them in and there are several houses right on the stream on the "road" side and a bridge or two right before the stream goes into the Yough.

I have a good friend who has parts of Westmoreland and Fayette county as a agent for the PA dept of environmental resources. I know that taking water samples is part of his job...Next time I talk to him I'll ask him (if I can remember and I'll post his answer.

Thanks fryem

I sent an email to a PA Fish & Game rep named d.tubbs about pollution in the slippery rock creek right after where it joins the connequeneshing.  You could smell a strong chemical odor and there was no fish.  No baitfish, nothing.  It was weird.  I never heard back.

Always consider calling or e-mailing PFBC and DEP and reporting anything that might be an illegal or detrimental pollution event.  They may not do anything, but then again they may.  It doesn't hurt to be cautious and it can only help to let these agencies know that people care about the particular waterway, even if the event is "normal" or permitted.

Your right always report it I reported to DER (a few years back about 5 years) upon by neighbors request to my buddy at the DER about soap suds & waste water from a rurual laudromat in Amwell twp that was turning my a neighbors field into a small quagmier and evently running into the pa trout stocked section of Ten Mile creek...And It looks like like it was corrected.  Point being if the info given is correct they (DER) do, do something about it.
