Status: offline 		Going out on a boat and fishing for perch (first time). Boat owner said we should bring our own equipment. What I need from you is suggestions. What type of setup do you use? Rod length, action, line, hooks, weight. I assume we will start out with live bait any suggestions on lures I may want to try? Feel free to add something I maybe missing.

If the boat owner happends to be a "guide" than get a new guide and report this poser to a WCO.
But if it's just a buddy with a boat than any rods will do just fine. The lighter, the more fun though!

Catching perch on Erie is about as easy as it gets! Good luck!

Status: offline 		That link will tell what you need.  I agree the non-stretch line is better, but you can do very well with mono.  In my opinion it's more importnat to have a fast action rod, than non-stretch line.

Status: offline 		Thanks guys for the advice and good work marty on the old post. Just a friend of a friend, my friend isn't a big fisherman so I thought asking suggewstions here about setups. Bringing my own equipment was my suggestion and my buddys friend agreed. I don't want to end up with some kids mickey mouse rod and 12 pound test line.

If you use circle hooks or kahle, what size do you recommend?

I guess I will go buy some braided line for the trip....my flourocarbon needs replaced anyway

Status: offline 		hope you learned some pointers ive fished erie and onterio for many years and never came empty cooler for a long time just look learn and listen currents also make a great point thus keep an eye on thermal and depth ive fishe 63ft for perch and as shallow as 23ft at 23 youll have a mix of bass and perch as well as gobbies kill and bait do not return alive  tight line cheers out on 58

Status: offline 		Why is it that on any inland lake perch will bite on nightcrawlers but on Lake Erie you have to use shiners or other minows?

Status: offline 		You can catch them on nightcrawlers, not sure why you'd want to, but you can. I've seen them caught on maggots too.  I think it's easy why shiners work best, because there are zillions of them in lake erie.


Through the ice in the bay, jigs tipped with waxworms almost always outfish shiners.

As Stillhead was saying, you don't have to but why not match the food they are already eating?

Status: offline 		Thanks Stillhead and Kayak 99. I live 60 miles south of Erie and get up to the lake only a few times a year. Probably less this year because of the gas prices. Besides looking for the perch fleet, what can I do to find perch this week. We usually launch at the East Ave. launch. Also is trolling to Shades Beach productive for walleyes?

Status: offline 		i like steak and perch on erie like minn or shinners they school up you have safty in numbers from a larger fish and worms dont school up in the water but are washed out by rivers or streams put a wjte pc of paper on a hook and you will catch perch ive seen it same for white bass just a observe maid
