Just wondering... I normally only fish for trout but when I moved here (2 years ago...) steelhead fishing was definately high on the list. Also what kind of flies should I use? Egg patterns?

To answer your question in a short concise way;

Nine foot or longer fly rods are fine and 6, 7 or 8 weight rods are used.  I prefer a 7 weight for the PA tribs.

Egg patterns in sizes  14-20 are the norm.

If you are spin fishing. Try a 11'6 Slow action rod. Or if you are fly fishing try a 9 or 10 foot rod probaly a 7wt would be your best bet

I prefer a 10' 7wt for the Erie tribs.  A 6wt would also be just fine, I sometimes fish NY tribs so the 7wt is a little better for the larger fish and rivers.  I like the extra foot to help get better control of my line.  As far as flies go, like mentioned above egg patterns and generic nymphs in #12-18 are probably the most effective(for me) overall.

Esox_hunter, thanks. I've heard alot of great things about egg patterns. Frankly I just don't use them for trout. But I probably will if a nice steelhead is at stake

My favorite steelie rod is a 10' 7 wt., but as important as the rod is a reel that has a great drag.

For flies, keep a variety of egg patterns, glo bugs, sucker spawn and crystal meth along with buggers and streamers.  Think blue.  I also have had very good success with nymphs, prince, pheasant tails, copper johns and soft hackles.  If you have a good variety of flies you can change up to see what they are hitting.  I have found that once they have seen a ton of sucker spawn or glo bugs it is a good idea to start throwing big streamers or nymphs.  In other words, if they are not biting what you are using, try something else.

Good luck.

I prefer a 9' 6wt with a large arbor reel. As for flies, plenty of sucker spawn, chrystal meth, buggers, and zonker strips.

All right thanks guys. I'll look into it soon, because I highly doubt my 7 1/2 foot, 4 weight is going to do the job

You can do it but it would be a lot more difficult. My buddy broke his 7wt and had to use his 8' 4wt and had a hell of a time but did land some. However, I would definitely go with a larger rod.
