IV'E BEEN ON THE TRIBS FOR A LONG TIME AND I CAN'T THINK OF ONE TIME I NEEDED OR WANTED A NET. IF YOU WANT TO RELEASE FISH, YOU CAN PLAY IT INTO SHALLOW WATER,BEND OVER WITH YOUR FORECEPTS AND TAKE THE HOOK OUT WITHOUT TOUCHING OR BEACHING THE FISH.
P.S.  I HAVE HAD A LOT OF LAUGHS WATCHING PEOPLE CHASE A FISH WITH THE NET AND I'VE BEEN UPSET BY PEOPLE WADING OUT INTO THE RUN TO NET A FISH.   GLEN

I take my little trout net with me all the time and i can only seem to get a full net of garbage when i leave, (other peoples trash left behind). Never netted a steelie just garbage. I do what glen does release the fish in the water without takeing them out to remove the hook.

BRUSHLINED STREAMS LIKE THE LITTLE MANISTEE YOU HAVE TO HAVE A NET. YOU HAVE TO LAND IT WHERE YOU ARE STANDING WHEN YOU HOOK IT AND IF YOU STEP IN THE WATER ITS USUALLY UP TO YOUR WAIST. A NET COMES IN HANDY AT THE SALMON RIVER WHERE YOU MIGHT BE FACED WITH A SET OF RAPIDS THE FISH CAN TAKE OFF DOWN.

I usually never carry a net, I use a small boga.  However, I did see a neat net made by Frabill at Sportsman's which was lightweight oblong and had a scoop at the end. (I was mistaken, no scoop at the end)  Check it out.  Perfect for steelys.  Here it is....tangle free bag too.

If you're wading in deeper water, like I often do, you need some sort of landing device so you don't have to keep walking back and forth to shore.  And you know what that means often times....if you move your meat, you lose your seat.  Especially on the Erie tributaries!

Heres the link if you want to check out the specs on the net.

How about a tail snare? Saw a fellow at the Oak use one and it looked pretty neat.

I carried one at first and now i don't. I just take them to the shallows and release them. Personally if you are going to keep a few, yes that i would take a net. But if you are releasing them I don't see a need. When wading in a deeper area, yes it is handy, but the lugging one around all day has its drawbacks too. I usally forget about it and leave it somewhere. In NY i like to use one, but in Pa for steelies i don't anymore. Its a personal choice, you will need to decide on your own.

I found that a rapala scale works well for not only landing the fish for release but also keeps you in a real world as to what a five pound fish really looks like.

Gentlemen,
Oddly I carry a net and try to net most of my fish to keep from dragging them on the gravel.  There have been times where a net was the only way to get the fish free.  And, like some others, I usually leave the stream with a net full of trash.  I've told this story before:  One year as my friend and I were walking down the creek back to the car I was picking up litter and putting it in my net.  When we passed a group of men lined up by a hole one man saw what I was doing  and called me over.  He then proceeded to clean out his vest and put his trash in my net.  My friend told me I had that "What the flock!" look on my face for about three minutes.  He had to sit down he was laughing sooo hard.

I like to net them most of the time, well I mean you need a buddy to net them...I always carry this net...It folds up and is easy to clip on the pack.

I usually always carry a net but rarely use it.  You get a 12 pound fish on you will be glad you have your net.  I hate leaving hooks in fish.  Leave the trout nets at home, you need a good size net to use it properly for big steel.

Same net my buddy carries with him.  I was thinking of getting one for this year.  I am just not crazy about the crossmember in the front of the net, it is kinda flimsy.  I agree with most about a net not being neccessary most of the time however, sometimes it can be helpful in saving a bit of wear and tear on the fish.  Also when fishing in crowded situations it sure helps not to have to move much to land em.

The rubber crossmember is flimsey, but it has never cost me a fish...and I have had the net for 3+ seasons

I think a net would be better than draging the fish acrossed the rocks and gravel.plus I hate when they break you off when trying to grab them.I've been trying to find a comfortable one to carry, cabelas net looks good

I couldn't find the size net I wanted, so I went to Bass Pro Shops, and found an inexpensive aluminum frame/handle net with the wide mouth and depth I wanted, then I cut the handle down to a much better length of about ten inches. This net is attached via a magnetic clip on my back, where it always hangs at the ready, handle down. One quick move, and its free and in my hand. When I'm done, I simply slide it behind me, and the magnet latches onto it right back in place. Can't remember exactly how many I netted with it last fall, but it was a pile. Many guys said they liked the set up. Might have cost ten bucks for the net, about fifteen for the magnetic clip. I really don't like to see steelies drug through the gravel and flopping all over the bank if they're going to be released. Not to mention if the day ever comes that I'm tangling with a true beast of a fish, I'll appreciate having the net along.

Occasionally, mostly @ Godfrey when I'm out pretty far it comes in handy. Screamin steel, I did the same thing (cut down the handle - altho not that short). Just tuck it in my wader belt in case the fish of a lifetime gets real stupid and chooses me !  Dave
