reading meck's book on streams and hatches in pa. last night and was wondering if there were any streams in nw or north central pa with native trout?  as for holdover trout, is there a chance that they can live for years?  i confess ignorance when it comes to trout fishing but it is getting more interesting as i get older.

Yes, there are native brook trout/wild brown streams.

Yes holdover trout can live for years.  The fish below Kinzua dam in the allegheny river are stocked as fingerlings and live for years. Same with the little Juniata river and I'm sure more, but that's just two off the top of my head.

Go here to the county guide.  http://www.fish.state.pa.us/county.htm

They have maps of each PA county and the streams that have native/wild trout populations are specially designated with a green color.   Hope this helps, I found a few nice non-stocked native streams this way!

Rapala11,
E-mail me at hemilovr@hotmail and I'll tell you where there are a few.  Depending on where you live they may/may not be a good bet for you.

the higbee stream map is junk. Yes, it lists every stream and river in the state and most of the larger lakes of an acre in size or so. It doesn't show any roads how to get there or show any other points of reference.

A delorme shows all of the same streams, smaller ponds and even small swamp sump holes, and has the roads how to get there. By far the better tool for getting around.

thanks
rick
