Why do you have to leave your spot to land fish? Why not net it and release it or just use your hemostats to pop the hook and let it go.

If your hooked fish runs into areas others are fishing-- easy to have happen when the quarters are close-- it is a common courtesy to follow your fish, just as it is a common courtesy for others to pull up their lines so you can do so.  Otherwise, you keep everyone between you and the fish out of the water while you land it.  Depending upon the fish, you may be able to stand flat-footed and play it in to your feet, but most likely not.

The above answer assumes your question was genuine as opposed to a rhetorical question based upon a superior fish-playing ability you may have over the average steelhead angler.

I have been catching grass trout with a fly rod and will be making my first throws this fall so I am going to say I'm sorry to everyone before it happens.  From the feel of it I may burn my spin cast set up. This is going to be more expensive than skiing!  When I die bury me with my fishing gear and I'll be happy.

For the people that take your spot just go right next to them. Or as close as you can. Then all you have to do is just cast right over top of their head.Or just simply explain to them what happened, be civilized about the situation. Also before you say something stupid just think over the situation and say something that can be said for all ears to hear.
