What are your guys thoughts on those who take your spot while landing a fish?  I have had that happen to me, but never would do that to anybody else.

Simple fix, walk right back, stand next to them and elbow them out. Not difficult to fix.

Anytime somebody has dont that to me (way too often) i just walk back and tell them what they did and ask them for my spot back. I have never had a single person tell me no or give me any ****e about it...

Most of the time the angler didnt even realize he did it!

Believe me...Ill be deer hunting.... I have no interest in being elbow to elbow with a bunch of guys fighting over 5 pieces of catfood in a puddle....

In all seriousness, I can understand the idea behind it, and can see why some enjoy it, but the idiocy that happens from manchester hole to the lake on Walnut is pretty much ridiculous....I could see enjoying being alone fishing and having fun, but then to come back to your truck to find the windows bashed out of it and all your gear gone...well that I wouldnt enjoy...well thats about sums up what happens in Erie, Pa during steelhead fishing.  Some are very professional about it and enjoy fishing...and others are up there just to cause alot of problems, poach a bunch of fish, and rob a bunch of vehicles....

PA is really close to losing my fishing license money each year...

Than why did you even participate in this thread?!?!

Childish would be yelling and screaming. I quick note, I'm also 6'1" and 225, so no confrontation happens. Most of time they may not know that you were there and again, if they did it doesn't take long for them to move. Most move just based on the idea that they are trying to catch and most get bored after not to long. These people that jump in are the same that jump right out after a couple of casts when the fishing is tough.

I would rather someone take my spot on the rare occasion when I am landing a fish than to have them horn in on me while I am actually fishing and try to crowd me out or drift their bait/fly into the exact same feeding lie when there are plenty of other good lies open around them.

This said, I am often irritated by the steelhead experts who have the only fish in an area cordoned off from others under crowded conditions.  I know first-come-first-served is applicable, but every once in a while under these circumstances, you'd like to see them invite some poor fishless soul to try the spot out or at least share it.

I'd say you're better of just telling them nicely that you were fishing there and had just chased a fish downstream. Allot of times spots do get taken on accident. I've seen it happen several times when the "spot taker" just didn't realize that the guy downstream originally hooked his fish there but had to chase it.  Actually, I've unknowingly jumped in somebody else on more than one occassion.

As far as the guys jumping in while you're actaully still standing there, unless they are intentionally snagging fish, I usually enjoy it very much. If you want to stand next to me all day and play net boy, be my guest

Steelheading has always been a great, and I mean great, experience.  Reguardless of where I'm fishing.  Yes, I hang out near Walnut Creek access early in the season, but I also fish way up on Elk during the late fall and winter.  And I enjoy it all.  While I'm fishing Walnut early, I enjoy seeing the fish, watching people catch them and the interaction with other anglers (yes they are anglers, not animals at the zoo, as is commonly believed).  I think that a person's goals should be different depending on where they are fishing.  If they go to the lower stretches of the popular streams, they cannot just have the plan of catching fish, you have to enjoy the entire experience.

Anyway, here are my goals for this season...

-Steelhead in the lake on my float tube.  This should be good.  Sink tips and big streamers.

-To get out more than ever.  This is gonna take a lot of work, because I was fishing at least 3-4 times a week last year, but I think I'll manage...

-To keep a detailed log of every, or most, days fishing.  This is a little out there, but should be fun and give me something to compare seasons with, and bring back memories in the off season.

-Be more prepared, and relaxed.  It's hard to do with these fish, they really get me going.  But, I need to keep up on my fly tying and make sure that I have enough tippet, splitshot...etc.  Running out of this essential stuff caused me to end way too many days earlier than planned.

Good luck everyone, and have fun.  (Even if you're deer hunting)

Mike

You think its bad working a 2mile area for walleye in a pack...how about a 4ft hole 100ft wide with 70 other guys trying to catch the 10 fish left in there....lol

I dont even want to think about steelhead or all the problems that comes along with that season.  Vehicles getting broken into, stuff gettin stolen, all the litter all over the place, guys down at walnut sleeping in trucks drunk arguing over who bought the last case of beer......

I won't tear either of you a new one, but I absolutely positively gaurantee both of you WILL be steelhead fishing this year.  This is a bad ploy to discourage people from coming.

Why does anyone complain about the battle that they contribute to? The streams are alot bigger than the stretch from Manchester down...... and Walnut (and Elk for that matter) aren't the only places to fish. Try upstream man! There's plenty of fish, they aren't sitting on the bottom scared and looking up at everyone, and it's way more peaceful. Imagine having a hole to yourself! You really oughta try it sometime. I never did get into fishing the mouths and always caught plenty of fish. By the way.... even on the Kenai River if you go to the most prime spot on the river you'll be elbow to elbow.

I must admit that I've been fishing Elk pretty hard for the past few years and have never experienced "shoulder to shoulder" fishing.  I always had room to fish and move around.

I can 100% absolutly assure you that you will not see me on a stream anywhere near Erie, PA unless im am carrying a gun, bow, or dragging a whitetail through it....I have NEVER even wet a line to catch a steelhead in a creek and never will...just not my cup of tea...I catch enough of them on the lake and at the creek mouths in the fall...

To each his own...i have 5 deer tags to fill this year...2 in WV and a Buck and 2 doe tags for PA...ill be busy enough filling them..

I dont know what the weather has been like in Erie these past 4 months but in southwestern pa its been very wet and rivers temps have been low for a period of time. If the same goes for erie then hopefully we wont have to wait til middle october for the steelhead to be only up to the con rail tubes.

Im hoping to convince the wife to have our sons 1 year bday party at the indoor water park in november but id have a better chance of being aloud to fish on our hunnymoon (niragra falls).

hoping to make some trips with timfisherman, koke, tommyb, and who ever else would like to pay an arm and both legs for a gas to fight some chrome.

dont let this recession ruin a beautiful thing ~ TIGHT LINES ALWAYS

LOL!  I would try that except the thought of pulling my waders down to squat my butt in the water in the fall.  Brrrrr.   Well, maybe early fall.

Yep I fished Walnut once and it was enough for me, I'd rather pound drywall screws through my potata sack

Anywho, this year.

I need to fish longer. Between my fishing pal and I, we either always leave mid day or somthing. Someone gets cold or hungry. I hate it. I'm not innocent, but I'd love to fish sun-up till sundown. I'm sure its amazing.

Also, use my fly rod to the best of my very novice ability this year. I've been non stop usuing it even on stockies. But I'm getting better. Hopefully I'll land a 40 lber this year, and make steelhead boots outta him.

I'm going to buy a digital camera, and take at least one picture before i drop it into the water, and get panhandled when i try to take it back because warrenty doesn't cover water damage :)

Finally, get my friends to come. People need to know how amazing this fishing is. I've recently got one good pal hooked on fishing in general, he smiles like a 5 year old when he catches a bluegill. I'd love to see him nail a steel.

You can always avoid the crowds 'Bagger by staying in the boat.  We do well on steelies in front of the west county tribs and the Bay until late November.

The question is: What is that you have to do to get the season ready to enjoy?

It's still way too early for me to even start procrastinating.
