1967-Bob pulls into gas station.  Employee fills up Bobs gas tank, checks his oil, and cleans his windshield.  Bob gives attendant a ten dollar bill for gas fillup and gets change back, including a five dollar bill.

2008-Bob pulls into a gas station.  Nobody puts gas into Bobs tank.  When Bob tries, the pump will not start unless Bob goes in and puts down a cash deposit or puts a credit card into the pump.  Bob pumps gas into his tank until the price runs up to 100 dollars.  The pump then automatically stops, whether Bobs tank is full or not.

Bob decides to find some good steelhead spots to fish...

1967. Bob goes for long walks during the summer months when the water is low looking for new access.
He finds some and has a great year catching fish from new areas he discovers...

2008.. Bob gets on Fisherie.com and asked to be spoonfed by people and bitches about "his" spots being over crowded. So he expects PFC to provide him more spots to fish, but don't want to be charged more for this extra land. He then starts a discusion about how they should stalk brown trout to give him more "bang for his buck".....

Yup, NOBODY took a "family vacation", out of state. Or made a midnight run to the Rusty Coathanger in the 6o's

1967, I was teaching in a small, well recognized, college making less money than I was peviously making as a laborer in the steel mills. 2007, after years of hard work and advancement, I'm retired! Woo Hoo!

Spoon, laws have changed and it MUCH MORE accepted today than in the past. The attitude around this neck of the woods is that it is just another "contraceptive". Plus, parents in some bordering states (NJ & NY) don't need to be notified.

1967 - Standing beside a small PA moutain stream with a bamboo rod that I had repaired, catching beautiful native brookies.

2008 -  Standing beside a small PA moutain stream with a bamboo rod that I had repaired, catching beautiful stocked rainbows.

The only real difference is now I can't get to the places of old.

we were never told why we were in viet nam then.
we were never told why we are in iraq now.

not sure how old you were during the nam era, but it was anything but a conventional war.  kind of like today.  the peasant you passed on the street today may be the same peasant to lob a grenade into your bunker tomorrow.  they didn't wear uniforms (always).  there was a growing dissent against the corrupt s. vietnamese government which spawned an insurgency.  we bombed the heck out of the north, but yet they kept fighting, the same way they kept coming at the french.

hippie or not, liberal or conservative....there has just got to be another way to solve problems other than war and killing.  as someone said here once, it keeps the population down.  true.

i loved colin powell for his statement regarding war.  he said that war should be the very last act after all diplomacy completely fails.

with both nam and iraq, one thing for sure.   american military personnel stand bravely before their orders and do what is expected.  they are to be revered.  other countries do not fear our lame government who bungle through issue after issue.  they do fear the strength and fortitude of the american soldier.

bless the hippies and bless the soldiers......dc dems and repubs should have to do a tour overseas before they are ever again allowed to vote on a war.

1967...my ball glove was on the handlebars of my bike during the day, every day.  at night it was my most prized possession.  (ted abernathy model later replaced by a fred whitfield model).  as i got older, it went into the trunk of my car.  finally hung it up in the early 90s.  still rub it down once a year with shaving cream.  never know?

1967...mitchell 304, garcia conolon glass rod, box full of cp swings, shysters, and maribou jigs and a stringer full of craps and gills in the basket on my bike.  seems as though we fished everyday and played ball everyday.  slept out in back yards at night to get an early start the next morning.

what a time.

The only thing worse than being in war is losing or quitting the war. It gives all your enemies the realization that you don't have the will power to finish what you start when the going gets a little tough. ------------1967--newly married ex Marine making many trips to the just completed Kinzua dam catching 5-10# browns in the tailwaters. Life was good.------------2008-- Still married ex Marine making many trips to the Erie tribs catching 5-10# steelhead. Life is still good

1967,,, going to college and getting a deferment form the war, and fighting the establishment

2008.., running companys that feed  off the war,Are the establishment

I really think the deferments were a major reason for all our problems today,,, talk about ethnic cleansing, that war  made sure we had an upper class
