I run a LCX112C on the dash. A LMS525c on the bow. Both are gps/sonar. i carry a hand held Garmin  gps in the glove box. No problems.  happy with everything. just wish they would make one with all the goodies. i like the idea of side view from humminbird.

My Raymarine is 8 years old, so old it's a Raytheon. Includes speed and water temp. I got it for a song, it marks schools of baitfish well, and it just keeps on running. The first one failed out of the box, dealer swapped me for a new one and handled the whatever directly with the company. Only drawback is it doesn't work well over 10 mph. When it decides to die I'll get another and hope it performs as well.

The problem I had with my Lowrance was minimal and could happen with any unit on the market.  All I care about is that they took care of the problem for me.  As for Lowrance "haters".  You don't even want me to recruit the 100 or so "quality" fishermen that I know that swear by them as apposed to the three that don't on this thread.  Bottom line (no pun intended) is that each person has his own preferences and what works best for them....its like the big Ford vs. Chevy debate and who likes what.....of all the units I've owned so far, for my particular applications, Lowrance has been the best.  All I know is I just caught two fish in a tournament today, I saw them both on the screen as plain as day and even pointed them out to my partner just having my rod rip off seconds after...It sure made a believer enough out of me!  Besides CB, I don't know how many saltwater guys you've fished with, but every one I know personally (and thats quite a few) and have been fishing with....guide or not, has had a Lowrance on board.  Maybe not soley as their GPS or sonar and vise versa, but always a Lowrance on board.  To be quite honest with you, never saw a Foruno on their boats really and these guys fish 24/7...One I do see alot of is Raymarine....Why?

Anybody know what would be a good, value priced fishfinder, suited for a kayak?

Wow Goose, you really got a good thread going on this one It was nice to finally meet you. We headed out to go to border but I lost 2 cylinders just before elk. Trolled around for the rest of the day trying everything but could not get a bite. Marked lots of them but couldnt get the bite going.
As far as your question, I am a cheap man and run a base line humminbird. It marks the fish, thermoclines and bait fish. I do agree the more expensive ones do better and one day I may upgrade. And color is a very nice feature

Give the Eagle 320C a look. It's a smaller color unit with a lot of good features for a good price. I have one on my trolling motor and i'm very pleased with it's performance.

I have both an Eagle FishElite 480 combo unit and like Indian Summer I have an LCX 18. Both have been "berry berry good to me". As for the customer service, I had to call them last year for my fathers unit that was acting eratically. They diagnosed it as a bad transducer and sent a new one, next day, no charge. Got ahold of them on the first try and the guy even called me back 2 days later to see if it fixed the problem, which it did.

My suggestion for the budget minded would be the FishElite 480 combo unit, at about $350 I think it's a great buy.

I have had bad experience with hummin bird on 4 different units, although I do find the sidescan interesting.

Good luck whichever you choose.

Ya know, we use a bottomline fishfinder and we mark the fish, and actually catch them also.
For the price, I think it works great.

Not saying lowrance is absoulte junk (id like to retract that statement), but i have heard of issues, and as an electronics guy im not that enthused by having the colors of their NMEA cords change year to year its confusing to the consumer and the people who would be installing electronics on your boat if you bought brand new.  It is of decent quality but is really shoved down the consumers throat by ads and "professional" fishermen.

I can say that raymarine and furuno are popular due to their high end machines being able to have radar, gps, and sonar all hooked up to 1 head unit.  They are very popular on center console boats due to space saving, and limited dash space. Not to mention alot of people flush mount electronics into the dash on higher end boats.  C120 Raymarine is a very bright head unit, but the screen is prone to scratching

For the mid level units you dont have much of a choice, and im sure lowrance is probaly one of the better mid level units available to consumers, but if I  were looking to spend $2-5k on my total electronics package I buy a Furuno.  And thats just my honest opinion.

had eagle fishfinders for 20+years no problems! bought vg200 model in 87 used it for a long time (18 yrs)
last year went out and bought a 480 model for around 200 bucks! the bottom line is if they mark the
fish+you know how to interpert them they work!! it doesn't matter if you have a 2,000 dollar unit or a
20 dollar used one, if the fish aint in a cooperative mood you aint catchin em' period!

Been reading with interest as I've been considering a new unit sometime this year.  How about the Raymarine A60 GPS/Finder pack for $879 (-$200 rebate) so really $679?  Sounds like a pretty great deal on what's reported to be a good unit.  Digital, HD etc.

That looks like a good unit from the Raymarine website. Although the speed, temp cable is seperate for another price. Where do you see it with a $200 rebate? Looks like a great deal since it is $1000 at Bass Pro Shops. They are all pretty good above $500 in color. I would buy it if your looking for one.

ram345.... I couldn't agree more. it's just sonar. How you interpret what you see is everything.

If you can see depth, bait, & larger fish what else do you need besides temp. Like most speed comes from the GPS and there is no interpretation factor there.

As far as changing cable colors. Doesn't matter to me. First of all I don't plan on installing a new one very often.... like never. A quick read of the manual will avoid that problem anyway and without a degree in electronics.

CB you're probably like me..... tear it out of the box and plug it in..... read manual only if neccesary, like asking someone for directions. I hear ya" Why change them???

Thanks for coming back on in a better mood and retracting the junk statement. They aren't junk by any means and as serious as I am I don't think I'll ever need to spend 5 grand on electronics unless I want radar.

I have a Lowrance 525 cdf and really like it. This is my first year with the unit. Before that, I had a Lowrance 107 cdf and though I liked it alot too, I wanted a combo unit in order to save dash space and I needed a larger screen GPS anyway because the handheld (RAM mounted) unit I was using just wasn't cutting it (screen too small to read while riding on rough lake). So I'm putting the 107 on my small boat.

It's a shame to hear that Lowrance customer service has gone bad. I've experienced top notch customer service from them in the past when I owned an LMS-350a on a previous boat (I think that was the model from what I recall). But it's probably been about 7 years since I've used their customer service. Just goes to show things change. Some genious in management probably thought they could save a buck by farming out the customer service, and while that might be true in the short term, throwing the company reputation down the toilet in the process costs way more than it saves in the long run.

I've heard nothing but good about Furono.

What fishFinder do you use? Why?
Can someone reccomend one that identifies baitfish fairly nice? w/o breaking the bank.

I've read thru all the posts. If you want a good fishfinder that will show you what's going on down there, you really dont have to spend a fortune. This picture is from my eagle 320. It's a PVC tree that i dropped today. There's a rumor that PVC pipe is almost invisible on your sonar. Yeah right.

Pretty hard to see, huh? I can see baitfish just as easy too. At erie, i can see perch on the bottom in 65ft. Eagle makes a good product at a good price.

Thats a hard to beat package in all respects. For the recreational fisherman, it has it all.
