put the boat in canonsburg in hopes of some bass fishing one evening last week. well it turned into one small bass in 3 hours time. anyone want to give up some advice. not looking for your hot spot or go to bait. I usually don't target bass but have read here that its an overlooked lake for them and since it is close I figured I would try it. it seemed like the whole lake has a steep drop off from the bank according to my depth finder. also can you take your boat on the other side of the bridge or does it get to shallow? I am using a canoe?

Stay away... LOL I've got bigger bass out of the creek below the dam than in the lake itself.

I agree.  Little Chartiers creek below the dam has some decent smallmouth bass in it.  Overall though both the lake and the stream are horribly over fished and crappy bodies of water.  Anyone knwo when they are dredging the lake?

hmmm i dont think it is that bad of a lake me and my dad went there we were only there for about 2 hours and we had 4 bass and some nice big panfish. yes there are better lakes but it isnt as bad as everyone says. (and those 2 hours included chasing my younger brothers around to

those places have been $hitholes for years and keep gettin worse...

I lived no more than a mile from there for a long time

after the floods from that hurricane (ivan?) in 05ish below the spillway got wrecked!
there is that large gravel bar now  and no structure  below the spillway

its polluted/ silted/ overfished
smells like hell..... and thats just the stream

i will admitt fishing there 2 times in the past month my gf lives close and I was bored...
i told my self "never again".... i will fish other waterways

KJH you are so spoiled fishing spring creek, everything else is second best!  If only I was so fortunate!

Back to the question at hand,yes there are a few bass in the lake.Some big ones actually,but you time is better spent elsewhere.Spinnerbaits have worked well for me if I have an hour or two because of the murky water,especially at dawn or dusk.Take the extra time to drive somewhere else.

Take a ride on some country road, find a farm pond, ask permission, fish them and then compare them to many of the other lakes like Canonsburg an etc, usually big an hungry fish are always there, also many larger area streams have nice fish present, my personal favorite being 10 Mile, last year i caught a hefty 22 inch largemouth in an oversized what i guess you can call a puddle on a nearby farm.

alot of the the farm ponds have too many bass in them. Every fish
10  inches. Not enough of food.

My buddy had a nice farm pond out in the Scenery Hill area.  There were no fish in that pond but smallmouth.  No baitfish, no bluegill, nothing but smallies.   For the most part it seemed like they fed on their own young to survive, but that pond was LOADED with bass.   On a typical summers day we'd pull 50 bass out of there in a few hours.   Every fish looked like a clone of the other, each was about 11" long, no more no less.

After catching literally hundreds of identical bass out of that pond over the years, one day I hit the jackpot and caught the big breeder.  It was a nice fat 5 pound female. 

You'll find that in a lot of local ponds.  Overstocked with fish and many are the same small size, but there is always a good chance of one or two lunker breeders lurking in there somewhere.

It's been so long I can't remember what road it was on, but it was the Foertsch (pronounced Firch) family pond.

Fished Canonsburg for 3 hours today after the storm on my boat. Absolutely no bass,not even a follow. Was bored and the lake is only 15 minutes from the house so I tried it. There were a few bottom fishermen I think trying for anything,but no one caught anything that I could see. I would classify this as the true dead sea instead of Arthur,at least I can catch something there. Should have taken the 40 minute drive.

A few friends and I Went out for about three hours this past saturday. We just walked around the shore for a while. Between the 6 of us:

Caught a crap load of the smalest panfish i've ever seen on a hook.
Caught 2 bass under 8 inches.
Caught a 12 and 16 inch catfish.


Meh... At least i caught somthing. I never caught anything at the lake before, i usually fish below the damn but there wasn't anywhere the 6 of us could have fished without spreading out.

Oh well, heading to pyma for some camping and fishing this weekend, hopefully we'll do better!

i walk the dog around there quite a bit....
always people fishing... never seen a "fish-in-hand"
there was a guy with a fly rod and a belly boat last weekend... heard him say "i know there are some big bass in here"

which makes me think he didn't catch any...

Peters Lake has been productive for bass for me.  Morning and Evenings are the best.  Try a kayak or canoe and get out to some spots that are less heavily fished and you'll find some nice largemouth.   I landed a handful of 4-5 lbers this summer that way.

seems to me that if you have a canoe or kayak, you can catch the fish. I also have heard that there are some big bass in there.  I caught a few last year fishing off the bottom with crawlers from shore but had to wait a long time for them.

I fish peters lake pretty often, usually from shore. To get the best fishing don't bother fishing in the obvious spots. Go for a walk in the "not so fished" places and you'll have better luck.

I've been dying to take my canoe out there and fish it, but i havn't done that yet... Hopefully soon.

There are some whoppers in Canonsburg (and Peters) You gotta put some time in to find and catch them. They didn't get that big by being stupid. They are both relatively small lakes. Toss something natural like a chub with no weight on light line and a small hook and let him swim.

Take a left at Donaldson's Crossroads (from Pittsburgh) and right just past the Highschool and you are basically there.  Check out Mapquest or something like that and zoom in.  It is about 5-10 minute drive from Cannonsburg Lake.

Follow McMurray past the high School and make a right on Center Church Road.  Follow Center Church all the way to the end and you'll run right into it.
