hi guys. just got back from florida snook fishing..it was awsome, this year i bought a boga grip to save my thumb and it worked GREAT. I think the boga would be great for steelies..easy on and off and shouldn't hurt the fish..i never seen anyone else up erie using one. does anyone else use these for steelhead?

Used one all this past season on Steelies, I wasn't ever very good at guessing weight the Robo takes the guesswork out and it definitely makes it easier to handle the fish and less likely to hurt them for release.

I'm sure the 30 pounder would work great for salmon and eyes. We have two 60 pound models for muskie and they are a heck of a tool. I use them to grab walleyes from the net before they get the harness tangled and to hold them while removing hooks and drop in the box. Pricy but Priceless.

I've never used one but I've seen a couple guys up in Erie use them. You don't ever have to touch the fish and can return them to the water unharmed with out having to drag them up onto the bank. (Or as I've seen in some cases people kicking them up onto the bank)

I've been thinking of getting one.

Took my normally used for muskie Boga on a family vacation in Florida, where my brothers in-law have nice off shore boats.  We used it to control and unhook dolphin (mahi mahi), cuda, bonita, etc.  Needless to say they are both looking for new ones.  Only thing I wouldn't have used it for was the Sailfish I had on for a bit.

I have owned one for nearly 10 years now and its still perfect.  Here is my modified version that I use for muskie fishing.  Do not settle for cheap imitations.

Amen to that... the imitations don't come close to the quality and aren't as gentle on the fish.

How about the Rapala proguide lock and weigh? I have the 20lb model but i haven't used it yet.

The teeth look too agressive to me and I'm not sure of the mechanism for big muskies... I've just had too much good luck with the Boga to ever even worry about anything else.  Besides, for another $30 you can get the Boga, proven the best.

The Rapala version is totally different. It relies somewhat on the weight of the fish to keep the jaws closed. And yes.... the jaws look nasty. Not something I'd want to use for catch and release. Even the 30 pound Boga is more damaging than the sixty pounder because of the size of the jaw. The smaller ones (including 15 pounder) have smaller components so they almost always punch a hole in the fish. The sixty pounder has a big rounded jaw that just grips as it's supposed to. But a Boga Grip is THE way to go if you're serious about fishing. The rest are like comparing the Wal Mart nets to a Beckman.

I used a Boga Grip knockoff that I bought from Offshore Angler last steelhead season.  I would never go out again with out it!!  For $24.99 with free shiping it was well worth it!!  My 9 year old son also loved using them!!

I had the berkley imitation when I was younger and broker.  It cost me A 48-49 inch muskie and another over 46" plus two smaller ones in one week.  The 46+ was the last of the bunch and now that knock off sleeps with the fishes.  Sorry  bout the littering but it deserved it.  Mine now looks exactly like shut's.

I pulled my gripper out to check it out and compare to the boga you have pictured here. Here's a few pictures. Explain what you mean about the jaws. I squeezed the trigger/ handle, and they opened just fine. Are you saying that i shouldn't use them for C&R only or that i shouldn't use them on any fish? They look like they'll hold any toothy fish really well.

Yes, exactly Chauncy.  They just look as if they may tear up a fishs' lip pretty bad especially if you plan on C&R.  If you plan on keeping fish, it should be fine.  Let us know how they work.  I just started with the Boga, had great results with it and stuck with it.  Good Luck!

The knockoff I had was the berkley model with the thin  plate jaws.  The problem was that if a fish rolled the jaws gave too much left and right and the muskies were rolling out of it.  Yours looks like it should work fine chauncy, like shut said I could see it tearing a fish up a little, but if you are using it on the front of the jaw that isn't anything that is going to hurt a fish long term.

Thanks for the reply guys..man after using that in florida this year, i was like where has this thing been all my life lol..i just thought, man this would be great for steelies and kinda surprised i never seen anyone using it up there but i'll be using it for sure this year..anyway i would recommend it for anyone on the fence about getting one...btw i have the 30lbs. model

Berkley makes a nice little handheld version that you can hang around your neck.  I'm sure it would work fine for steelhead because the Boga seems to be little too heavy and bulky for carrying around the streams..  I also got a small knockoff Boga on ebay last year that I use when I go steelhead fishing and wading into deeper waters.  It works perfect and I paid like $18 for it.  Good luck!

The Boga is typically used for the ones you want to release unharmed....Naw, I'd use "The Club" on 'ol Joe!

That's fine, I'll have my limit by then and I'll die happy. My family will at least know that ShutUp has quality harnesses on his rods then since I bet they won't be returned to them with the rest of my possessions.

Sounds like  a good prize for our bet since I know you won't wager cold hard cash. Who ever gets a ticket first gets to troll the other guy around on the Boga by the lip for 1 full minute. I have two 60 pounders...... how about by your nostrils?

I once though about taking my boga to the bars in Peterboro, Ontario, however most of the women exceeded the weight limit for my model, and I was unfortunatley unable to release them, so I had to take them home.

Word to the wise always select the correct weight limit or you could be sorry some morning.

MM, I'd have to agree with ya on the Peterborough/Bobcageon women...Too much for my Boga!  Now Windsor, on the other hand, is a totally different story!
