We're going to be trolling for walleye early next week if the conditions are good.  If fishing is slow we may switch midstream and head for a perch pack.

Question 1 - normally we load up on emerald shiners for perch but rather than load up with too many shiners in case we don't end up perching, what else can we take along in case we do switch?  Will perch hit nightcrawlers, gulp worms or other artificials?

Question 2 - we'll be launching from Lampe.  Is the bait shop still at the entrance to Dobbins Landing or is there a better place to get shiners?  I know about Poor Richards but wonder if there are other places closer since we'll be coming up I-79 to get to Lampe.

Thanks

You could just launch from East Avenue, it's right beside Lampe and has bait.

I don't konw of anything better than shiners for perch.  Are you worried about wasting the money on shiners or having them die?  Because they're probably cheaper than the other baits you suggested and even if they die, they will work fine.  You can also cut them in half.

The guys boat is docked at Lampe but we can stop at East Ave if shiners are sold there.  Didn't know anyone sold bait there.  Last time I launched on East Ave there was nothing but a porta-potty, or did I  have the correct launch?

The reason I asked about alternate baits was because if we hit walleyes, we may not even fish for perch.  Hated to buy too many just to dump them.  We don't get up to the lake very often. The others baits I mentioned could be saved and used when we fish smaller lakes, creeks and rivers.

How about salted emerald shiners?  If the dead ones work, those would probably work, and Wal Mart sells them.  You can always keep a couple packages with you just in case.  Probably work cutting those puppies in half too.  And, if you find out they work, and you do buy live bait and don't use them in the future, you can salt your own minnows for later use even if they die on you.

Now I gotya.  We were up on Sunday and ran out of shiners.  We tried nightcrawlers with very limited success.  I also filleted a small perch and used pieces of the fillet.  (I hope this is legal;  I have done this with flounder with good success.)  However, it did not work at all for the perch.  I tried with and without skin.

Good luck.

Definately not legal, you cant clean a fish in the lake unless you have a guide permit and then you must keep the left overs which can not be disposed of in the lake, must be put in proper place

Found some things afew years ago that was called "perch candy"  and looked like little plastic shrimp bodies.  Came in orange, yellow and light green and worked really well.. About 3/4 > 1" long.

Wonder if Berkley carries something like that?  I'm headed to Harrisburg in the morning with a planned stop at BPS!

I don't know what a dozen of emerald shiners costs , but if we're talking about the same power minnows by berkley they cost $19.99 for 30 at gander mountain ,pretty expensive i thought ...... course what isn't expensive now days just my .02 cents There was something the guys were talking about last year...... can't remember the name . I think they were made in Canada I'll try to look at the old posts & see what i can find.Maybe they where using them on the EJ or Victory?

Sasquatch - You can definitely get bait at East Ave - $2/dozen but they probably give you 25 per dozen, if that makes sense

FiveDog, what is there?  Is there a building or something portable?  I ask because the last time I used that place (and it was a couple years ago) there was nothing there except the portapotty!

Its a trailer.  You can see it from the Lake.  Its definitely been there for two years, its the only place I can find bait early in the morning, since the guy on Presque Isle shut down.

DeerSlayir - I saved the carcass of the fish and ate a piece of perch sushi so I think I was legal?

It probably moved in after I last used the place.  Might have been three years since I used that ramp though.  Thanks for the tip!

We use large Swedish Pimples for our weight.
Tie a short 3"-5" snell on a #4 hook and put a snap swivel on both ends of the pimple.
When the action is slow you have very good attracting action with them..We use them up to size 9 which is 6" long...

Anyone have any luck fishing fathead minnows for perch.  They bite on them on the in-land water lakes.

Keep yourself some Case Trout Worms in your tackle. White's been my best color with a switch to black usually makin the difference when white doesn't work. 20 Perch on a single worm is not unusual.

Got blown off the lake today. (we were in a 24 footer and the winds whitecaps were growing)  Only a few fish, one keeper walleye.

Stopped at that bait shop at east lake.  Great guys.  Great advise.  We'll be giving them more business in the future. Bought a few dozen shiners but never got to fish them so it's off to the salt bag for them!

those would be Sabbeeky rigs(sp), you would still need to tip them w/a minny or worm though. I think Capt John on the EJ is the only one around who has them

This may have already been mentioned above, but I've heard that the perch have been biting on emeralds cut in half as of late.  Could be the stronger scent?  How about trying a hair jig tipped with a piece of crawler?  Good Luck!

They are called and spelled Sabiki Rigs.  I have several left over from saltwater trips.  Sharp little buggers though.

Make sure to cut them down to 3 hooks to be legal.  I know the sabiki rigs we used down in the gulf to catch bait all had 5 or 6 hooks a piece.  And you are right, sharp little suckers and they like to tangle a lot.  I had several shirts decorated with them.  Just cut the hook off and keep tossing the sabiki and loading up the bait well.
