Brookie1 -> Salamander? (7/8/2008 3:25:28 PM)

I was fishing Beaver run over the weekend and came acrossed a orange
lizzard about 5 inches long. it had some green diamonds on it. it almost looked fake. it was the color of a orange power worm.  I think it was
a salamander but not sure. anyone know?

Ahh man, you shoulda killed it!

Sorry, I had prompt the "everything has a purpose" argument.

I've seen them a few times, just passed them off as just another lizard I guess.

I've seen them as well, I guess I always though they were a newt.  I've found big huge salamanders but if I recall the ones I seen similar to what you describe didn't really have slimy skin they were more of a dry skin lizard.

The little orange salamanders with green spots are actually efts (juvanile newts).  They're terrestrial when they're young, but they return to the water when they mature. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-spotted_newt

yea you should of killed it because its as harmful as a snake is.

JMZ82 -> RE: Salamander? (7/10/2008 8:58:28 AM)

Harmful as a snake is?? how do you figure, I've caught them before when I was younger and never had anything remotely close to an ill effect.

Dont worry about what Kyler says.  He is just poking fun at Brookie for not liking snakes.

But then again Kyler is Mr. no show himself for things he says he will attend.  And Mr. I sent my money for a ticket too.

But hey no one is perfect.

Red Efts secrete a mucous that can irrate your eyes and nasal passages.

Take care

I caught a big black one with yellow spots once, and took it home to show the kids. I threw it in the tank that held their pet turtle. The turtle was on it's back, dead, in less than a half of an hour. I got rid of the salamander before the kids got home from school, and told them that their turtle died form old age!  Fishmonger
