I have a Penn Slammer reel that seems to have developed some problems and I would like to find someone in the Erie area who could take a look at it for me.  Do any of you folks know of anyone in the Erie area that works on reels?  If so, I would be interested in contacting them.

I see you've gotten no replies so I figured I might try to help. Don't know of anyone near Erie but for reel and downrigger repairs everyone I know uses Tackle Unlimited on Rt 51 in Jefferson Hills. Thanks Indian Summer.  I will check them out.  I did go on line and get the info about sending it back to Penn, but their typical repair costs which include the initial fee to look at the reel, hourly labor charges, parts and then return shipping could be as high as $50.00.  The reel cost a little over $100 so I am wondering if it is worth getting fixed.  Hope fully the shop you recommended will be a bit more cost effective.

bug, i think bass pro has techs that do reel repair these days.  you may want to give them a call.

Tackle unlimited junked one of my ambassadur 7000's for me.  The guys I use are out of minnesota, I can't find the link right now, but if you go to the musky hunter magazine forums and ask there they will let you know.  These guys fix them, send them back with and invoice and are super fast.  Very happy with their service.

I did check with the Penn folks and from the information on their website it is going to be a rather expensive endeavor to send the reel to them.  As I can best calculate it will cost around $20 to $25 to send the reel to them, have them check it into their system, check to see what the problem is and send it back.  That does not include parts and labor.  They give an example of what I would assume is a typical repair and it comes out at a little over $50 and that does on include the cost of shipping the reel to them.

I guess it is just expensive to repair a reel no matter how you look at it.  I am spoiled because I had a guy in Nags Head, NC repair a couple of reels for me a few years ago and basically all he charged was parts and a couple of bucks to put them in.  Of course, he is no longer in business and even if so, it would be a bit much to drive to NC just to get a reel repaired...  On the other hand I could do some fishing while I was there....[:)]

Of the other places listed on online the cheapest(not best) was $29 + parts + + +
It is great when you can find an old local shop that is reasonable.

I had bearing problems with a few of my Penn SS spinning reals and found that it is easier and a lot cheaper to fix them myself.
Find exploded view with part # and order new parts
Most bearings are easy to replace.
Disassemble:
Use air compressor to clean grease out of bearings then put parts in ultrasonic jewelry cleaner filled with parts cleaner-don't let wife catch you[:D]

Next reel I sold on ebay stating that there is problems or you are selling for parts.
I think it went for half what the new or mint ones sold for.
Take money from sale and buy a new one.
This was the best and cheapest option for me.

I am not sure exactly what the problem is, but I suspect you are right that it is a bearing issue.  I have a Penn Prion that developed a similar problem.  It was a pretty cheap reel, so I just set it aside.  I really like this Slammer 260 and would like to get it back to working the way it was.  I do know that I rarely have had problems with my Shimano spinning reels.  I have two that are over 20 years old and still working well.  They have a few minor wobbles, but I have fished the heck out of them over the years.  The two Stradics I have are fantastic.

Shimano reels are the only thing i will fish.  I've had no problems with any reel from them either and i probably have 20 or more.  They are reliable, smooth and fairly inexpensive if you calculate the cost of replacing a reel from another company that wears out after 2 seasons.

If it feels gritty when you reel in you probably need 1 or up to 4 BEARINGS #020-260

Disassemble then blow the grease out;
"Feel" each bearing-if it is bad you should be able to tell when dry
My guess would be one or both bearings behind sideplate.

Thanks.  The problem is the rotor cup seems to have quite a bit of wobble in it.  Would that be caused by a bad bearing?  When I got the reel it did not seem to wobble at all.  I checked my other reels, mainly shimano and the rotor cup on them don't seem to wobble very much, if at all.  From what I described, if you think it is a bad bearing, I will definitely replace them.

Bad bearings behind the side plate would make the handle wobble or not turn smoothly.

It could be the one or both bearings on the shaft #39 in diagram
The shaft could be bent, the screws could be loose, rotor nut #38 could be loose.

I got the reel fixed today.  I want to give a big thanks to Brian at FishUSA.  I stopped by the shop today and told him about the problem I was having with the reel and in a matter of minutes diagnosed the problem, a loose nut and fixed it.  Another example of the excellent service at FishUSA.

yep it was.  There is still a very slight wobble in the rotor cup, but not bad at all.  I am back in business.   Thanks for your help.
