just noticed, but the article above is from 2003.  i think since that date, there has been irrefutable evidence to not only prove that it is happening, but that we may be to blame.  bush not only acknowledges this now, but says that something should be done.  uh, he is almost out of office, so the official record will now state that he said that we must address this problem.  forget the kyoto accords from years ago, it is now a problem.

Hey Rock, I try to see the world from mulitple viewpoints.  As far as energy and global warming goes I try to absorb and learn from multiple sources.  There is no clear cut answer. At no time did I say that Al Gore had all the answers, or any other politician for that matter.

I live in the middle of an oil field, I serve in a military that went to war for more oil som Americans can maintain their current lifestyles, there is a refinery one mile from my house and I live a life that revolves around energy consumption .  The commutes for the three jobs that I work as as follows: 30 miles, 60 miles and 72 miles.  I would appreciate it if you didn't make assumptions about me, call me names or imply that I am someone's lap dog.  Natural resources put food on my table, a roof over my head and clothes on my back growing up. And they currently account for one of my three jobs.   I understand the importance of the bountiful resources in this country.  I also understand the power of money in the country we live in and the indifference and doublespeak of politicians from both sides.  I haven't committed to Obama or McCain. I'm waiting for the presidential debates and I'll vote for the leader whom I think will best serve the interests of our country, not just me.
I'm not going to list the inconsistencies or multiple instances of sheer ignorance in your statements...oh wait...I just can't help pointing out just one...yeah..."we got problems here of our own,, they want to live in low lying areas , their own demise,, tired of hearing about we got to change our ways to help some so called illiterate in these third world nations"...that is an awesome statement...you have offended everyone from George Bush to Jesus Christ with that gem...BUDDY...are you really serious??? You're going to blame poor people from third world nations that crap in holes, watch their kids die in front of them from the common cold and subsist on a dried shrimp and a couple grains of rice...while we sit here and argue on our computers??...nice...I won't start on the blantantly moronic positions you presume to defend about global warming because I think you're a troll and you're just saying dumb crap to get a response.  Do I know if global warming is happening or not and why it's caused??...helllz no...Do I have common sense that tells me to conserve, care, be responsible and leave things better than I left them???...hellz yeah.  Have a good one, BUDDY>>>

well ldd, i to am close to your position,i drive 3 hrs a day to/from work, work 10/12 hrs a day ,6/7 days a week,, i am also in a sector of the oil industry,,,i dont get no breaks on price,so it effects me to,,, as far as third world,,you think we should give up our lifestyle, cause we are told its our fault they live that way,, like i said ,,no politician is going to convince me of global warming caused by humans, unless there is a scientific proof of the matter,,, i agree with you on political double speak,, both sides of the isle,, not a personal attack on you per say,, just tired of everyone willing to give up their freedoms so easily, thru politician views,, i to served this country, i thank you for your service,,,, we cant maintain being the savior of this world at totaly our costs

I don't think we should give up our freedoms but I do think we need to evaluate our needs vs. our wants and desires.  Right now we are a society of excess and I believe that that excess weakens our country a great deal.  Hard work and sacrafice builds character and I think this country needs a heavy dose of character.  I believe America is the greatest country on the planet but I also believe we are getting away from our core values.  Whaddya know..we agree on a couple of things after all

Agreed, agreed, agreed Rock.   Also note how the media has gone quiet on the subject of global warming in recent months.  It all started due to this year's International Climate Conference held in NY back in the late winter.   I won't get back into all that from a post back then---you can Google the subject---but the media ran for cover when they saw the agenda that failed to promote hysteria and shock appeal.  Note how we also have stopped hearing things like 'April was the 7th warmest April in recorded history....'.    That's because recent months have been quite the opposite or dare I say closer to 'normal'.   But, one little heat wave and I'm sure shock appeal will be back.
I also agree with you on nationalized health care.   Those fans forget one minor little detail.   If you give the health care to the tens of millions who don't currently have it, where are you going to get the doctors?   We forget lawyers drove doctors out of the business or out of the country.   You can't plant doctor seeds in the ground and hope for doctors to sprout 6 weeks later.   The solution would be free trade of sorts to bring doctors here from overseas, but that would create doctors you can't understand and who can't understand you.  Ah, the forgotten details of those who can't see the forest through the trees.
I also find Krauthammer very easy to agree with on most points.   He is a man very in tune with reality.  He can commonly be seen weighing in on the day's hot topics on Fox News around 6:40 PM on most nights.

i see one of these everyday, so obviously it isn't quiet.

TOYAKO, Japan (CNN) -- A call from the world's most powerful nations to establish the goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions worldwide by 2050, was criticized by environmentalists Tuesday.

Oxfam members dressed as G8 leaders hold balloons representing the carbon their countries emit per capita-

The agreement by the Group of Eight industrialized economies -- which includes the United States, Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Canada and Russia -- was struck during the G-8 summit in northern Japan.
The goal must be compatible with "economic growth and energy security," the leaders said in a statement. They also said it must be done with cooperation from all major economies, including China and India.
However critics argued that the 50 percent reduction target was insufficient, and have called for ambitious midterm targets for countries to cut emissions by 2020.
"At this rate, by 2050 the world will be cooked and the G-8 leaders will be long forgotten," Antonio Hill, spokesman for Oxfam International, told The Associated Press.
"The G-8's endorsement of a tepid 50 by 50 climate goal leaves us with a 50-50 chance of a climate meltdown. Rather than a breakthrough, the G-8's announcement on 2050 is another stalling tactic," he said.
Kim Carstensen, Director of the WWF Global Climate Initiative, was equally scathing: "So little progress after a whole year of minister meetings and negotiations is not only a wasted opportunity, it falls dangerously short of what is needed to protect people and nature from climate change."
Ben Wikler of AVAAZ, a group that champions environmental concerns, said: "The failure to act on 2020 targets is a failure to take responsibility, and our members around the world feel that there is a childishness to not taking responsibility."
The European Union is on record as wanting an agreement to require developed countries to cut their emissions by 25 to 40 percent of 1990 levels by 2020. The United States, Japan and Canada oppose those targets.
Previous efforts to prompt coordinated global action on climate change have stalled.
Ten years ago, the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change passed the Kyoto Protocol with the goal of limiting greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. The United States was the only one among 175 parties -- including the European Union -- to reject it. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon gives his view »
Washington has long argued that China and India should be required to address their rapidly rising emissions. President George W. Bush opposed the Kyoto Protocol because it did not include strict emissions limits for China and India.
During the Bali conference on climate change last year, the United States reluctantly signed onto an agreement calling for two years of additional negotiations on reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Don't Miss

Principal Voices: Climate Change
The negotiations must proceed on the view that the problem of climate change cannot be adequately addressed through commitments for emissions cuts by developed countries alone. Major developing economies must likewise act," the White House said in a statement.
The Bali pact is meant as a guide for more climate talks, which will culminate in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2009.

    Gone,

First of all. and once AGAIN the  International Climate Conference held in NY, was sponsored by the Heartland Institute. It was FAR from an objective debate of the subject, but rather a carefully scripted rally. They had an agenda, and invited only those scientists ( most funded by some segment of the energy industry ), that would promote THAT agenda.

Second, the media has not been quiet in fact I just read a report on the effects of melting sea ice on Penguin populations.

Third, regional temperatures, have nothing to do with global climate. WE experienced a rather cool spring, and early summer, but the NW saw record highs during much of that same period. Just because it is cold in a partiular region, even record cold, doesn't mean the earth isn't warmer. The midwest just experienced their second 500 year flood in a decade. We have seen over the past two years, tornados in areas were the are not common, record numbers for certain months, and in months in which they do not typically occur. No one such event offers proof, but an increasing pattern of events DOES provide evidence.

Spoon is right on the money here.  I come from the school of "lies, damn lies, and statistics."  Meaning, any individual number can be crunched and interpreted in many ways.  What is important is the "Central Limits Theorum" or "mean of means."

In a nutshell:  If one were to take an infinite number of random samples (say average temperatures of cities around the GLOBE), add these temperatures up and divide by the number of cities, one would guess that you would be pretty close to the mean (whatever that may be - average earth's temperature).  However, if you did this activity over the course of 20-30 years, I am guessing that the AVERAGE temperature around the globe is increasing.  If that is the case, then there is a problem pilgrim.

As humans, we are so quick to point out anything that goes against what we WANT to believe, or anything that briefly aids in our defensive positions.  Luckily, there are averages!

hers the solution, lets start by shutting down all business that uses fossil fuels for energy, lets throw away our cars, boats, trucks,, gas stoves, electric heaters,, grab the blankets ethel, going to be a cold winter,, oh yea,no more wood burners, that nuclear power plant, shut it off,,, go back to eating raw meats,no means of cooking, like our ancesters,,, but we can solve all this,,pay these elite nations a new TAX,and we will look the other way, OH ,THE POWER OF MONEY,,,we will drop the temp by 1/2 degree in next 1,000 yrs,, i say lets start now,,time is running out,,dont worry tho, cause in about 20/yrs,when things cool down ,and the pockets are lined with tax dollars, then we can work on global cooling,a new ice age

That's the kind irrational, emotional response, that makes it so difficult to take guys like you serious.

We are not advocating giving up all these things, Just using them effeciently, and responsibley. I guess THAT is too much of a burden for folks like You. You talk with great pride, and patriotism, of how America was built on sacrifice, but don't ask YOU for any. Don't ask YOU to drive a little slower, turn your heat, or AC down a few degrees, shave with a blade instead of electric, open a can by hand, buy a few ( terribley expensive ) re-usable shopping bags, or make ANY changes in YOUR lifestyle.

During WWII there was rationing of many things rubber, sugar, coffee, gas, etc. companies converted production lines to build armaments, and other items vital to the war effort. Ask the people you follow, to make those same sacrifices today, and they'll laugh in your face. Hell you guys don't aren't even willing to pay for the war you so strongly support.

    Let's take the opposite response.

Let's just business do ANYTHING they please. Pump whatever they want into the air, or water with NO regulation, clear land at will without remediation. THEN the economy will boom (yeah right), and we'll all have the lifestyle we want. Provided that does not include having fresh potable, affordable water to drink. Or to be able to enjoy fishing the once lifeless, but now thriving stream we fish today. If you don't mind suffering respiratory ailments, and they ensuing costs. Then it'll be great, because afterall profit is ALL that matters.

"wasnt it 3/4 yrs ago we were told by these so called bright minds that we were in for severe hurricane seasons that never happened,, but all there models showed we would,,,"

What they predicted was that these storms would FORM, not necessarily make landfall, and they WERE fairly accurate. The fact that they didn't make landfall, meant no one paid attention, not that they didn't form.

All of those shifts happened over tens of thousands of years — and science shows none of them is happening now.
Instead, atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide are increasing at a rate that precisely tracks man's automotive and industrial emissions.
"The process is 1,000 times faster than nature can do it," Battisti said.
Climate reconstructions show that average global temperatures for the past 2 million years have never been more than 2 to 4 degrees higher than now. That means if greenhouse emissions continued unchecked, temperatures would likely be higher by the end of the century than any time since the human species evolved.

"spoon, if i aint mistaken,,i remember them quoting how they were of from their hurricane pred.,, never mentioned not just hitting landfall,"

You're right, but if you notice I said storm not hurricanes. I should have included " that reached hurricane strength" in my post. I'll try to be more precise in the future. The actual number of hurricanes (6) was normal and below predictions. The number of named storms (14) was above normal, and consistent (though slightly lower ) with predictions. NO they can not predict the PRECISE number, or intensity. And NO, "every time we have a devastating storm now its from global warming or climate change,,not the fact these do happen". Singular events, or even singular seasons are not evidence either way. Once again, TRENDS do. Consider also we are talking about Atlantic hurricane season. I know you don't like this, but there ARE other regions, and they have their own storm seasons. Your hometown, is NOT the center ( OR totality ) of the earth.

Here's some other info on the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season.

    Records set in 2007
    1) Hurricane Felix set the Atlantic record for fastest intensification from the first advisory to a Category 5 hurricane. It took Felix just 54 hours to accomplish the feat.

    2) Hurricane Humberto set the Atlantic record for fastest intensification from first advisory issued to hurricane strength--18 hours. (Actually, Humberto did the feat in 14 1/4 hours, but this will get rounded off to 18 hours in the final data base, which stores points every six hours). There have been six storms that accomplished the feat in 24 hours.

    3) Hurricane Lorenzo tied the Atlantic record for fastest intensification from a tropical depression to a Category 1 hurricane--twelve hours.

    4) With the occurrence of Dean and Felix, there have now been eight Category 5 storms in the past five years--the highest total ever observed over such a short time span.

    5) Dean and Felix both made landfall at Category 5 strength, the first time two storms have done that in a single year.

"i read a book by newt and to this day he is probably the most intelligent man to step into washington politics, his contract for america,if the dems would have left it alone and jumped on board"

    The Dems?

Balanced budget amendment: would be fine under Clinton. Neither of the Bush's, or Reagan would have faired well with it.

Term limits: Republicans  lost interest once THEY gained the majority.

Line item veto: Got it through, but Republicans had a problem with it, when Clinton started USING it.

I tend to like all three ( Republican, don't seem to. They could have gotten all three 2001-2007, and didn't even TRY. ). I always believed our vote, was the ultimate term limit, but Im leaning the other way.

Newt's on what? His third wife? Great defender of "family values", and the "sanctity of marriage". I'll agree, a brilliant man, don't always agree on his thinking though.

most scientist (majority) work off federal grants and funding, which puts their findings in the political arena, so now we have scientist that dont buy into this HUMAN MADE global warming and climate chang theory, which in turn ,are not getting any or minimal funding of govt grants cause of their stance against the agenda, these scientist are funded privately for most part,, these policies are for one reason ,that is for a one world govt order, where no nation will be able to live outside the guidelines or the world richest globalist,(gore, bush, powerful senaters, congressman, among other world leaders),,, ever notice everything is a world wide summit on policies,no more national problem but worldwide,, dont have to have a college degree to notice, but just pay attention to the rhetoric of it all

"so you saying these are global warming related,, 2 in a season,,"

Nope. How many times do I have to say it? Trends, trends, TRENDS.

"thats only one more than normal,,conditions couldnt have been right for this, right,"

Could very well be, yes these things DO happen. It could also be ONE piece of evidence.  The events in one region, or over ONE season, or year, do NOT make a trend, they MAY provide evidence, but not PROOF either way. Why is this so difficult a concept to grasp?

"thats climate change,, no one disputing that,,, but my car caused it,, well..."

Caused it? No, but it probabley added to it, and played a part. There ARE some 7 billion people besides yourself, as well.

Yes, there ARE natural causes of global warming. But the "natural events" that cause rapid, intense warming, are not occuring. So SOMETHING else must be. Perhaps a huge increase in population, and industrialization over the past century, and a half? No, couldn't be possible. If it was, we might have to try, and do something about it. Maybe cut 1-2 trips to Eries. OH the humanity.
