Gentlemen,
Just by chance does anyone on this site know how to get a manual PTO  (driving the mowing deck) on a Cub Cadet 126  (1968 Model) to DISENGAGE?   I've been told that normally they won't engage but mine stays locked up.  It's a little dangerous starting the thing with the deck running.
And NO!; Whacking the snot out of it with a hammer will not work.
Almost any suggestion will be appreciated, and possibly tried.

indsguiz,we had a 1965 cub, does yours have a lever on the side to "kick in" the mower, if so I would bet that the fiber button is gone from the metal depressor on the front of the pto clutch, when not engaged the fiber button acts kinda like a pilot bearing,if missing mower would run all the time.

treedaddy,
Thanks,   it was missing, so I replaced it.  BUT it still won't disengage!  I'm getting very frustrated with this tractor.  It's not the big things (looks, runs and works just fine)  It's the little things that are driving me nuts.  (although most of my friends would agree that it isn't so much of a drive as a two-foot putt!  LOL[8D])

The springs in the clutch are probably shot (I'm guessing) that is what the little button rubs on.

jack, from an old timer that fixed and fixes cub cadets as a living says there are two buttons up on the front piece of the clutch. one is metal and the other is fiber. the fiber one is most likely worn bad and won't let the clutch dissengage. you'll need one or both buttons if the other is worn also. any other questions let me know b4 the old guy, well, before he's not around anymore!! ~dt

doubletaper,
Both buttons are there it's just not working right.  Guess I'm going to have to take it to the Cub Cadet shop for a check up $ $ $ $ $!.

indsquiz, the hammer is the best idea.  Never fails.

Ok guys, now it has developed another problem:   The solenoid will not engage when the solenoid is mounted on the tractor.  It works fine on a bench test but on the tractor; no go.  Everything else seems to be working well.  Starter turns over when jumped; engines runs when jumped, and solenoid works when off the tractor and starts the thing.  I'm wondering if I should direct ground the mount for the solenoid?   Normally I'd get rid of the thing but it is totally restored and my grandson shows it at antique tractor shows.   Am I overindulgent, or what?

if the solenoid works when it's not grounded to the tractor than you are better off mounting it on rubber pads of some kind. i would say there is a short somewhere. check your ignition switch, the terminals maybe corroded and this causes all kinds of problems.
most solenoids have to be grounded to the frame to work unless they have 2 smaller side terminals. one side will go to the saftey switches and to the S terminal on the ignition switch.and be + where the other will run to ground somewhere thru the wiring. on a solenoid with only 1 side term. the frame of the solenoid makes ground and the 1 side will be your safety wire +.
if there is an onan engine on the tractor, onan uses what we call a positive ground. old onan and some old kohler engines have to have a good batt. to complete the circuit to stay running.

DT,  Thanks,  I already grounded the solenoid and moved the engine ground.  Now it works.  Took it to a guy who claimed to know how to fix the PTO clutches and it came back worse.  Between trying to maintain my house, reapir my own tractors, fix my grandsons' antiques and go to the Dr.  I haven't had time (or money) to do anything.  Everytime I head for the shop to try to work on a rod or two the phone rings with another "Help me Obese-One, you're our only hope" story.
This year I've had three pieces of farm equipment go down, two lawn mowers, the two antique mowers and my pick-up, plus my van died and I had to buy  new vehicle (  I hate car payments).  Gee it's fun.
